Democratic Primaries

By Liz Goodwin GLOBE STAFF APRIL 05, 2019
NEW YORK Senator Elizabeth Warren lobbed another policy grenade into the Democratic primary Friday, announcing she supports drastically changing the Senate by eliminating its legendary filibuster to give her party a better chance of implementing its ambitious agenda.
The move puts her campaign rivals on the spot to explain how they would pass their own ambitious legislative priorities if the Senate keeps its rule in place requiring a 60-vote supermajority to advance most bills.
Warrens announcement allows her to swerve to the left of Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont in a meaningful way at a time when shes straggling far behind him in early polls and grass-roots fund-raising.
Sanders, who popularized proposals like free college and Medicare for All among Democrats during his 2016 run for president, has been reluctant to support scrapping the filibuster. That raises questions about how he would be able to pass his sweeping proposals into law should he become president, given Democrats are extremely unlikely to have 60 seats in the Senate.

that liz is looking at how she is gonna get shit done reinforces this.
we will continue to fail at core shit till we balance the scales. this matters to me.

(35,619 posts)...for the US to stop supporting the Saudi War on Yemen.
The next step is for Trump to sign or veto it.
Even in the latter case, Trump would be making himself more clearly responsible for the crisis.

(58,785 posts)to the same purpose. I read that Democratic senators were very angry, though not surprised at his behavior.
The Republicans cooperated with Sanders as a way of promoting him and helping him establish some fake foreign policy credentials for his next presidential run. Sanders is not on any foreign relations committees. I didn't find any in the past, either, though I haven't looked all the way back.

Like this time when she again thought on her feet and acted. She doesn't need to harangue but moves forward. Isn't that progressive?

Student Loans
Friday, May 17, 2013
With student loan rates set to double on July 1 to 6.8 percent, Sanders on Friday endorsed legislation by Sen. Elizabeth Warren to set student loan interest rates at the same 0.75 percent level that the Federal Reserve offers to big banks. A great idea, Sen. Bernie Sanders said of Warrens bill. The only thing wrong with this bill is that Elizabeth thought of it and I didnt, Sanders said Friday on The Thom Hartmann Program. A Congressional Budget Office report on Tuesday projected that the student loan program administered by the U.S. Department of Education would yield a record $51 billion profit off student borrowers.

Well, you have to give Sanders a high-five for being honest in the moment.
Truth is Elizabeth Warren runs circles around the Senator from Vermont. Warren is a pragmatic progressive--not simply making the grand pronouncement but actually providing a realistic roadmap to get from point A to point B. She's highly intelligent, policy detailed and frankly, I do not know why she isn't doing better in the early polls.

(11,514 posts)I think she has the best and most well-thought out policies of any of the candidates, thus far, as well as the best nuts and bolts understanding of the economy, and financial issues. A fair and well- functioning economy is the foundation for just about everything else in the Democratic platform.
