Why the Democratic Debate Was So White

Speaking to Stephen Colbert on Wednesday’s episode of The Late Show, Yang offered his explanation for the whiteness of Tuesday’s debate. “What I said at the debate before this one (is that) fewer than 5% of Americans donate to political campaigns. You need disposable income to contribute to campaigns, and you need some form of security in order to run for office. So what happened on the stage last night reflects the inequities and realities in our economy,” Yang said. “We should be more concerned with changing those realities on the ground. And if we did that then the stage would look very different. If you have communities of color who are just making ends meet, they don’t have the resources to contribute to campaigns at very high levels, and so you wind up with a stage that does not reflect the population of the country.”

Hiking the MW will not solve this problem. Changing the tax laws to one which will hit huge, very profitable corporations in a way that they cannot escape, and investing that money into Americans everywhere to circulate throughout their communities will address this problem.

had the polling needed and the cash and chose to quit anyway

6. Are you sure?

The polls I saw showed Harris significantly behind Biden with exactly the groups she should have been strong with. As much as I would have LOVED to see her go after Trump and really think she should NOT have dropped out, I thought it looked like Joe sucked the air out of her campaign.

But my observation is that it takes (barring the exceptional charisma of Obama) 10-20 years to lay the groundwork for a presidential run. Hillary in 2016 and Joe now had/have been getting ready for 20+ years. Two years as a Senator just doesn't give one enough time to build the network needed, historically (Obama and Kennedy both had time in the House, and the blessing/backing of a lot of the establishment of the party, at least more than Sen Harris).

8. My hunch on Harris and others who dropped out early: they want to get the VP nod from

Warren or Biden (I don't think Sanders will sustain a lead). Castro or Booker could match well with Warren, if she wins). I don't think we'll get two women on the ballot, tho. At least not this time -- maybe at some point, yes (hopefully I'll still be around to see it!).

4. I watched the interview clip posted earlier

and he is absolutely correct.

5. And honestly, it doesn't look good that the issue was ignored completely

in the last debate.

If someone did mention this issue in the last debate and I missed it, please let me know. I would really love to be mistaken about this.

but, I may be mistaken as I didn't watch it.

Whoever we have as our candidate will need support from all races. I didn't expect the issue to be dropped so quickly once the last non-white candidate was off the stage.
