Wed Jan 8, 2020, 04:48 PM
Jan 2020

From the very beginning of 2016.

https://www.cnn.com/2016/01/11/politics/joe-biden-bernie-sanders-hillary-clinton-income-inequality/index.html

VICE PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN: If Bernie Sanders had never said he was a "Democratic Socialist," based on what he is saying, people would not be calling him that. That's how he characterizes himself --in sort of European terms-- like the Democratic-socialist parties in Europe.

GLORIA BORGER, CNN: But why is [Clinton] having trouble [beating him]?

BIDEN: Bernie is speaking to a yearning that is deep and real, and he has credibility on it. And that is the absolutely enormous concentration of wealth in a small group of people with the middle class being left out...

CNN: But Hillary is talking about that as well?

BIDEN: Well, it is relatively new for Hillary to talk about that. Hillary's focus has been on other things up until now, and it has been Bernie's --no one questions Bernie's authneticity on these issues.

But that was before Biden knew he was running against Sanders.

I assume that they overall said positive things about each in the past and will again in the future. That doesn't mean that they are in total agreement on everything. At the moment they happen to be competing against each other for the same office, it only makes sense for each to make the case for why they should be preferred by voters, which includes exploring whatever differences they have.

For example, he has repeatedly knocked Biden for supporting the Iraq war. But that doesn't contradict anything he said in that 2015 video. One can have both positive and negative things to say about someone, and choose to say one or the other depending on context and circumstances.

I mean, of course, you may speak about someone's best attributes in some circumstances and things you are critical about in other circumstances, but I don't see this as any different than, for example, Biden having complimented Kamala Harris at some points and been critical of her at others. The statements are not contradictory if you're not criticizing her for the same things you complimented her for. Sanders criticizing Biden over, for example, the crime bill or the Iraq war vote, are not inconsistent with the comments he made in this 2015 video. It is normal to be more magnanimous toward someone when they have announced that they will NOT be competing with you, and less so if you find yourself actually competing with them.

I will grant you one discrepancy, though. In the magnanimous appraisal of Biden's record of helping the working class, Sanders neglected the bankruptcy bill, which he mentions now, which is arguably a departure from Biden's consistent support for the working class. At least Warren was very critical of that bill at the time.

Thu Jan 9, 2020, 12:36 PM

about his life in public service. I see you threw "bankruptcy" in as well as "Iraq" in attempt to whitewash Bernie's hypocrisy. Bernie is on tape with Lou Dodd several years ago discussing immigrants and how they take jobs away from the American working class. He also supports the F-35 mega military industrial complex work done in his state. I can throw things out there, too. That doesn't change Bernie's hypocrisy in now trying to denigrate Biden when he is on tape complimenting him before. It's not like we haven't seen Bernie's repetitive smears against Democrats before.

38. You're conflating different things
Thu Jan 9, 2020, 01:04 PM
Jan 2020

What does Bernie having said/done things you don't like have to do with it? The fact that there are legitimate things to disagree with Sanders about in no way means that there can't also be legitimate things to disagree with Biden about! Of course you can throw things out there too, who said you couldn't? It doesn't invalidate what Sanders has said. It's that old whataboutism again.

Nor is there hypocrisy in criticizing someone you have complimented before. Different circumstances, different subjects. It is indeed possible to both compliment AND criticize someone. I can easily compliment AND criticize Obama. And there is no reason I have to repeat my criticisms when I compliment him, or repeat my compliments when I criticize him. It doesn't make it hypocritical to talk about my criticisms on one day, and my compliments on another. Why would this be a problem?

I am so sick of the repetitive one-size-fits-all criticisms that you are attempting here. There is NOTHING BUT HYPOCRISY when you look at what Bernie said in October 2015 and what he is saying now. It's nothing but hypocrisy. I think we're done here. I'm not the least bit interested in you substituting all the lame Biden insults into everything.

Thu Jan 9, 2020, 02:04 PM
Jan 2020

Heck, neither is my first choice, though I'd be okay with either of them... and could see myself voting for either of them in the primary, if they are polling way better than Warren in head-to-heads against Trump in swing states.

I just don't think that having different opinions about someone at DIFFERENT times about DIFFERENT policies indicates hypocrisy. There is no candidate I would say 100% good or 100% bad things about. Having a mix of feelings, and not stating every one of those feelings at every time and in every context isn't hypocrisy. That is the ONLY point I've been trying to make, and nothing you have said addresses that.

If I were to vote in a presidential
