The passage of time does not make it any less so. The fact that it was said publicly several years ago should have been a warning to Sanders that this person should not be part of his campaign. Instead, he hired a woman who was known to have slandered a respected Congressman and one of the heroes of the Civil Rights movement. If there's some excuse for that I can't think what it would be.

Maybe you should try and do the same. I.E. Focus on John Lewis immediate health crisis.

Of course it matters. I'm interested in knowing if she has any integrity. We've seen her hate. We've seen her betrayal and treachery in her vote for Stein. Let's see what kind of compassion she can muster up (or even imitate convincingly).

All I'm saying is that if we're looking at her tweets and other ugly comments over time, she's a real piece of work.

I just know that when someone can make a remark like that it speaks volumes of who they truly are...

It says so much about who she is and whether she said it before John Lewis was diagnosed with Cancer or not is irrelevant. And it also says so much about the Sanders campaign in my opinion too. And if people want to defend this kind of comment about a civil rights icon and good person like John Lewis....well, that says a lot about them too.

So we have her with that attitude, we have David Sirota with racist attacks against an opponent in Philadelphia, we have Matt Orfalea who created disgusting videos of MLK, we have Darius Khalil Gordon who posted dozens of anti-semitic and homophobic tweets, and this.

She should go into a room by herself and reflect on her life, and where she'd be were it not for the work of men like John Lewis. I guarantee she would not be the National Press Secretary of a national campaign.

I am not defending the tweet; I read it yesterday and it was horrible and disgusting.

I am so sad about Lewis and his announcement. Meeting him in 2008 during the primaries then was one of the highlights of my life. I don't live in his district, but I am in the Atlanta metro area so I see news about him often. His presence is felt here.

Here's why I have a problem with the OP: it was posted as a way to use something terrible -- the pancreatic cancer diagnosis -- to draw attention to campaign staff. The post wasn't really about Lewis; it was about the Sanders campaign. It was the first post I came across on DU after seeing the news in the MSM that didn't start with expressing sympathy for Lewis. That's why it bothered me. I don't know the motivations of the new member who posted it, and I don't need to.

The OP wasn't about Lewis as much as it was about using him as an object to further an agenda. And I hate seeing that done by any campaign because it diminishes the gravity of the situation.

I respect you tremendously, Cha, and I support Biden as well as Warren. This reply is just me being transparent and honest about how I feel.

I wonder why someone who, when they put up this OP had been here only a few hours, was allowed to shriek "Squirrel!" and have us all gallop off in the direction of something stinky -- instead of taking a moment to reflect on the shining life of an American hero.

We are not "defending" John Lewis when we do that.

Great job for the person who joined up to do this though. It's not everyone with only 12 posts under their belt who can start an OP that generates this much noise.

Bernie doesn't need anyone's help to look bad. He's got pretty definite track record of hiring people who either have to scrub their twitter accounts (Sirota, Victoria Dooley, Briahna) or firing people whose twitter histories couldn't be scrubbed fast enough (Matt Orfalea, Darius Khalil Gordon).

The pattern is obvious. If you don't see it, it's because you choose not to.

Second worst is Bernie hiring such a person to be his National fucking Press Secretary. It's not like DUers did't give Bernie shit for hiring Bri Bri in March. Her tweet about John Lewis was discussed here 9 months ago.

https://www.democraticunderground.com/128730527

A dumbass post on a messageboard, seen by maybe a couple hundred people, is way down on the list.

I have no problem with reminding people what Bri Bri thought about John Lewis when he was healthy, so they've got context when the eventual hollow best-wishes come from Bernie and his campaign. If I were more cynical, I might even believe that the eventual best-wishes might be pandering to the AA community, to try to boost Bernie's god-awful standing with black voters.

But I'm not that cynical.

Sanders. That was pulled out 3 years later particularly because this person was diagnosed with cancer. It has nothing to do with anything and is using the illness of a civil rights icon to attack this person's boss -who has nothing to do with the tweet. It is disgusting and divisive.

I bet John Lewis laughed if he even cared to review it.

Trying to use this tweet as a way to attack Bernie's campaign because John Lewis now has a tough cancer diagnosis -- that would be disgusting.
