Buttigieg shows signs of emerging from the Democratic pack

Pete Buttigieg, the relatively unknown mayor of South Bend. Ind., is showing signs that he could emerge as serious contender in the 2020 race for the Democratic presidential nomination.

The first piece of evidence signaling the 37-year-old Buttigieg could break from the pack chasing a group of big-name candidates came from an Emerson Polling survey this weekend that showed him trailing only former Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) in the Democratic race in Iowa. Buttigieg won 11 percent support of likely Democratic caucus-goers in Iowa, behind Biden’s 25 percent and Sanders’s 24 percent.

“A couple of weeks ago I wasn’t giving him any attention at all, in part because I didn’t think he had a chance, but I am getting more and more intrigued,” said Jim Manley, the Democratic strategist and longtime Senate veteran.

“The Buttigieg Boomlet is real,” added Democratic strategist Christy Setzer. “He’s everywhere, he’s authentic and he’s interesting and counterintuitive in his message — all of which makes him both a media darling and a serious source of intrigue for primary voters.”

Basil Smikle, the former executive director of the New York Democratic Party, said that Buttigieg also has a compelling message that is resonating with voters.

“Where other candidates are running against Trump, he’s using a compelling back-story to run against Republican hypocrisy embodied by Pence and Trump enablers,” he said. “It’s a tactic that undermines Trumpism rather than Trump himself and potentially appeals to a wider swath of disaffected voters.”

packaged in traditional power narratives. That means a white male.

I still think our BEST candidate is Rep Joe Kennedy III. He's white, male, wealthy, well-educated, progressive in policy, low key in style, and tied to one of the most powerful legacies in American history.

It's such a puzzle to me why Democrats are not demanding that he run. He's absolutely perfect.

30. We have had three Presidents do that.
Mon Mar 25, 2019, 11:42 PM

His success will depend upon who he surrounds himself with as he makes policy. The three Presidents that were Mayors at some point before being elected President? Calvin Coolidge, Grover Cleveland, Andrew Johnson. Coolidge had a decent administration but did not pay adequate attention to building speculation on Wall Street and in banks nationwide. Don't know much about Cleveland. Andrew Johnson largely got caught up in the post civil war maelstrom, him being a democrat, the party being out of favor because of it's tepid disposition on abolishing slavery.

Abraham Lincoln was not a mayor or even a member of Congrese when he won the presidency, he rose from a little known Illinoise legislator to the presidency. Abraham Lincoln's big break came when he did a speech at Cooper's Union that was well received by the abolitionist movement in the North, from there he gained enough traction to take the Republican Party nomination from William Seward and other better known politicians.

In short, Mayor Pete can not only take our party nomination, if he surrounds himself with the right people, he has a chance to go down in history as a great President. I think Trump will leave him lots of big problems to fix.

And it's perhaps more appropriate to his age and political experience level.

At this point I want him on the ticket in one spot or the other. Although the fact I've not seen him work a crowd yet makes it so this a tenuous recommendation. I do need to see that.

He legit seems like a special person to me from what I've seen thus far. We've done pretty well with really special men like Obama and Clinton, and failed w/more average people like Gore and Kerry (don't get me wrong I love both of them!).
