Texas leads the nation in transgender murders. After the latest attack, the Dallas trans community asks why

Robyn “Pocahontas” Crowe’s family is shrinking.

In May, her granddaughter was found dead in Far East Dallas, her body marred by a single gunshot wound. Less than two weeks later, police discovered her cousin’s body in White Rock Lake. She had been strangled and beaten.

Like Crowe, both Muhlaysia Booker and Chynal Lindsey were black transgender women. The three do not share a blood bond. But they came together through experience, forming a chosen family.

Crowe is still grieving their deaths. Then, on Sept. 20, another transgender woman of color, a Latina, was shot on a northwest Dallas street. The attacks have many trans Texans asking, why does this keep happening to us?

That independent senator from Vermont stepped into it with that response.

Warren's answer to read out the names of every transgender woman who died every year in the Rose Garden wasn't inspiring either.
I'm sure she meant well, but it came over a bit strange in regards to addressing the problem.

SANDERS: We need moral leadership in the White House. We need a president who will do everything humanly possible to end all forms of discrimination against the transgender community, against the African-American community, against the Latino community, and against all minorities in this country.

But above and beyond providing the moral leadership of trying to bring our people together, what we also need for the transgender community is to make sure that health care is available to every person in this country, regardless of their sexual orientation or their needs.

And that is why I strongly support and have helped lead the effort for a Medicare for all single-payer program, which will provide comprehensive health care to all people, including certainly the transgender community.
