Buttigieg surges to third place in new Iowa poll

South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg (D) surged into third place in a poll of the Iowa caucus released Sunday.

Eleven percent of likely Democratic Iowa caucusgoers surveyed by Emerson Polling said they would pick Buttigieg to be their 2020 presidential nominee.

Overall, Buttigieg placed third behind Former Vice President Joe Biden, at 25 percent, and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), at 24 percent.

Polls this early don't really mean much. I heard that about this early in the 2004 race, Joe Lieberman had a huge lead in the polls.

That said, it's still quite significant that Mayor Pete has gone from abject obscurity to being a legit contender.

Pete Buttigieg got his own number for respondents to press at the start of the robo-poll and the other candidates didn’t.

If he's the first candidate named and you "can't go back," then he or his number is more likely to be forgotten by the end of the list.

Since you believe the poll is bias against him.

That is, different respondents got a different order. That seems like an obvious thing to do.

But even if they did that, it seems odd to separate out one name from the others.

primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

...it would explain the surprise result.

Maybe he quickly became popular in IA.

The next IA poll will tell us.
