Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumMy younger brother is a businessman, and has been a Republican all his life.
We generally don't talk politics since he basically refuses to with me. I tend to overheat when discussing it, and it's hard to deal with.
Anyway.
Today, he told me that he and his wife like Pete and they plan to vote for him in the CA primary. She's a Democrat.
To say I was surprised is an understatement.
I am very pleased! He's super intelligent and not a tea-party sort.
Just wanted to put that out there.

(17,865 posts)I am not sure I would brag about a Republican voting in the Democratic primary. If he has a sincere change of heart and accepts the overall philosophy of the Democratic party, then welcome.

Mr.Bill
(24,317 posts)can vote for a Democrat in the California primary. He can if he is not affiliated with any party, though.

(149,688 posts)He may well be a "decline to state" which would make him eligible to vote in the Democratic primary.

Mr.Bill
(24,317 posts)who are "decline to state" people to ask if they want a ballot with Democratic, Libertarian or (Green Party?) candidates on it. Republicans are not welcome to vote for Democrats and Decline to State people are not welcomed to vote for Republicans. It's an odd system, but it's decided by the parties. This is only for national candidates. For state and local it's an open primary.

(149,688 posts)He was actually responding to something I wrote in our holiday letter. I said: "Politics also finds her involved and alternately engrossed or appalled." He asked: Why only occasionally? And I went on from there!
I was extremely pleased.

(9,992 posts)And anything but a prissy wuss. Not wearing a tutu, or a boot on his head. His background in military intelligence is a major plus, given the fiasco currently in place.
An Uncle Joe/Mayor Pete ticket?

(25,894 posts)he should have left the Republican Party around 1980 or so.
With all due respect to your brother. He may be very smart, but he sure as hell has blinders on, and has for decades.
Let's just hope that he votes for whoever the Democratic nominee is next year.

I am quite sure that he will not vote for tRump. If you have a look in GD, you'll see a video I posted there. My brother sent it to me.
He will almost certainly vote for the Democratic nominee next year.

(7,220 posts)It's taking far longer than we'd hoped, but the decent folks out there are coming around.
MY younger brother (also a lifelong R, but definitely NOT a smart businessman), has quietly taken down his pro-trump swag. Admitting he was wrong is something he'd never do, so this is the best-case scenario in this case.
