...stances probably explain why they are leading among Trump voters. For example, not too long ago, Steve King (R) was praising Bernie's anti-immigration views:

?lang=en

Likewise, Bernie has sponsored anti-immigration legislation with Chuck Grassley (R). Both Bernie and Gabbie have made a name for themselves by attacking Democrats from the "left." Gabbard has pulled ahead of Bernie by making frequent appearances on Fox, plus she is anti-Islamic and has a history of being anti-LGBT.

Gabbard is the most conservative of the bunch.
Sanders is the biggest maverick.
Yang is a businessman.

So those who voted for Trump for those reasons, if considering jumping off the GOP sinking ship, might logically look first to these candidates. But of course what we don't know is whether they would actually vote for any of these over Trump, or merely voiced their preferences among the Dems.

Gabby endorsed Bernie for President in 2016. Bernie has featured Gabby as a co-found of the Sanders Institute.

Tulsi Gabbard In Vermont: Protect Our Resources From Those ‘Driven By Greed’

With those words, U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii introduced herself to an audience of some of the brightest and most influential progressive minds in America, from Cornel West to Bernie Sanders.

“You can’t hold your breath for very long,” she said in her smooth, measured tone. “You can’t exist for very long without air. You can’t exist for very long without clean water.

“However, so many of the decisions that are being made with regards to policy, many of the decisions that are being made by the corporations, the decisions that are being made by those driven by greed rather than driven by putting the interests and the liability of the people first, don’t take this into account.”

Gabbard traveled to Burlington to take part in “The Gathering,” an ambitious three-day event put on by the Sanders Institute, a left-leaning, nonprofit tank that pushes progressive ideas such as Medicare for all, tuition-free college and a Green New Deal.

Her domestic policies at least (the positions on her web site as well as what she has supported with her congressional votes) are Sanders/Warren left (and remember she quit her DNC position in 2016 in order to support Sanders' campaign). It's harder to categorize foreign policy, because even if for different reasons, the far left and far right can often overlap.

I have mixed feelings about Gabbard. I'm fine with most of her positions. I think she went off the rails attacking Hillary, though maybe it was politically brilliant, because her name recognition and poll ratings have never been higher.

But considering her appeal outside the base, I'm thinking that she could be a VP choice that could help capture the 2016 Trump voters we need in the battleground states. Getting back to the OP, a ticket that has some appeal to 2016 Trump voters is not a bad thing... it's actually something we need if we want to win. Biden/Gabbard? Sanders/Gabbard? A white male head of ticket almost has to choose a VP who is something else...

16. Warren/Castro/AOC are very different from Sanders/Gabbard on Immigration
Fri Nov 15, 2019, 01:07 PM
Nov 2019

Elizabeth Warren has taken a very different and far more progressive stance on immigration position than Sanders/Gabbard. Warren has pushed for liberalization of immigration policies, which is similar to both Castro and AOC. Trump and Republicans have denounced such positions and being pro-Open Borders, even though they are not.

Rather than join Warren/Castro, Bernie still echoes RW talking points denouncing open border policies even though no candidate is pushing for open borders, which is a thinly veiled shot at Castro and Warren. Of course, Gabbard is well known for pushing for denouncing the acceptance of refugees and asylum seekers from Syria.

While Sanders/Gabbards anti-immigration views might play well with Trump voters, I don't think that is a plus. I don't want Trump-lite on immigration issues. This is why I would support Warren, Biden, Harris before Sanders, and definitely before considering Gabbard. This does not even mention the whole Russia friendly views of both Gabbard and Sanders.

https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/450259-warren-joins-castro-in-call-to-decriminalize-illegal-border-crossings-report

Warren has yet to release a comprehensive immigration reform plan, but expressed her support for Castro's plan in a statement to HuffPost.

“We should not be criminalizing mamas and babies trying to flee violence at home or trying to build a better future. We must pass comprehensive immigration reform that is in line with our values, creates a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants including our DREAMers, and protects our borders," Warren said in a statement to HuffPost.

Warren told The Washington Post earlier this month that she would seek to repeal criminal penalties for people apprehended while crossing the border.

Sawyer Hackett, a spokesperson for Castro, cited the former Housing and Urban Development secretary's call to repeal the law in April as one reason he is "undeniably a leader on big ideas during this primary."

They have been pretty lock step, except that Tulsi has been more outspoken in attacking Democrats than Bernie has usually been.

In contrast, Warren has not made a name for herself by attacking Dems. She has just fovnsed o cm the issues than trying to demonize her own party.

but the sample was 42 participants. How is that not pretty much worthless?
Let's also be clear that Gabbard is currently running an anti-Hillary/Dem campaign so these numbers should not be surprising nor should they be regarded as promising for the GE. The anti-Dem vote will go to a Republican, not a DINO.

Gabbard is leading among them, but she doesn't get nearly 100%. The fact that a combined 15% support Biden/Steyer/Mecham is telling, that alone is enough to defeat Trump in swing states (remember, he got 100% of their vote last time), even if the Gabbard/Sanders/Buttigieg/Warren/Bullard splits vote for Trump again (which seems unlikely given some support Warren and Buttigieg).
