Bernie is being Bernie, and plenty of Democrats don't like it

The Atlantic’s Edward-Isaac Dovere reports on Sen. Bernie Sanders’s hiring of an infamous left-wing attack dog:
snip

As a political matter, Sanders (I-Vt.) has stirred up a hornet’s nest, reviving resentments from 2016 in which mainstream Democrats saw Sanders as promoting himself and his cause at the expense of party unity. As Dovere wrote for the Atlantic, "The online fury of Sanders’s supporters was one of the most defining characteristics of his 2016 campaign. Sanders himself has said he is sensitive to that, as well as to accusations that he created divisions within the Democratic Party during his 2016 run against Hillary Clinton.”

The hire is especially worrisome for Democratic candidates and their staffs who vow to support the nominee in an effort to avoid a bloody internecine fight. As for Sirota, his reputation for vicious, personal attacks was well-earned. The Atlantic found, “On Monday night, after being contacted for a second time by The Atlantic with a list of specific questions about his undisclosed work for Sanders, Sirota did not respond to the email but deleted more than 20,000 tweets. He left fewer than 200 online.” That’s what you call a guilty mind.

Social media exploded with criticism of Sirota’s extreme views (e.g., praising former Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chávez), his underhanded advocacy for Sanders and, even with all that, Sanders’s decision to hire him.

I was about to post it

Among the numerous long-time Democrats with whom I spoke about Sirota (none of which either works for or endorses a particular candidate), there was a common theme. A veteran Democratic insider tersely said, “David Sirota has been operating as a vicious attack dog against every Democrat who has been a threat to Sanders and, now, he’s just being paid for it.”

An alumnus of the Obama White House tells me, “The value we have as former government officials, especially those who worked with media, is the light we can shed on how the system works and how it’s broken. That’s why we need to be especially careful to disclose any relationships or conflicts when commenting publicly.” The former staffer added, “It’s not hard to do and gives even more credibility to what you’re saying. By not disclosing, you’re perpetuating the same shadiness that Bernie decries. To really show he’s grown since the 2016 experience and has broader appeal, Bernie needs of show he can bring the party together after what will be a tough nomination fight."

In a similar vein, a veteran of multiple Democratic campaigns and progressive causes observed that Sirota’s reputation is unique even in the hard-hitting world of social media political operators. “He’s the perfect storm: self-righteousness, ideological zealotry, and bullying obnoxiousness.”

At a time when Democrats are decrying President Trump and his band of cronies for polluting political discourse, pitting Americans against one another and seeking to destroy political enemies by character assassination, Sanders’s hire seems decidedly off-key. Rather than condemn Trump’s tactics and appeal to voters’ desire for something better, more high-minded, Sanders suggests through this hire that his operation will be just as mean-spirited as the current White House’s. The prospect of replacing Sarah Sanders or Stephen Miller with Sirota doesn’t exactly fill one with joy.

I loved his policies and so voted for him in the 2016 primaries. As Clinton caught fire, I switched to her side but still liked him. Later when I learned he had hired Paul Manaforts' partner as his campaign manager (WTF), that he lied about releasing his tax returns, that he had hired some of Steins, read Russia pushing, staff, that he knew about sexual harassment of his staff and basically ignored it - that door shut. With learning about the Sirota subterfuge the BS door is now shut, locked and barred forever.

If you asked me to give examples of a war on Democrats, I could. Saying the party is "ideologically bankrupt" "feeble" "They want us to go back to their failed corporate approach." "Democrats have focused too much with a liberal elite that is raising incredible sums of money from wealthy people ... but has ignored to a very significant degree, working class, middle class and low income people in this country." "Are you qualified to be president of the United States when you're raising millions of dollars from Wall Street?" "The current model and the current strategy of the Democratic Party is an absolute failure." "It is not good enough to have a liberal elite." "The business model, if you like, of the Democratic Party for the last fifteen years or so has been a failure." "The Democratic Party has been dominated by wealthy campaign contributors." "And I think what Trump was able to do was pick up on the failures of the Democratic Party that did not talk about the fact that hard working decent people saw their jobs going to Mexico or China, or people cannot afford to send their kids to college or afford child care ... ." "It wasn't that Donald Trump won the election, it was that the Democratic Party lost. We need a Democratic Party that is not a liberal elite but of the working class of this country ... ,"

There are plenty more examples of a war on Democrats.

"Are you qualified to be president of the United States when you're raising millions of dollars from Wall Street?" The simple answer is no... Bernie is absolutely correct on this. Taking millions of dollars from those corrupt assholes on Wall Street is not a good look and why many candidates have sworn off taking their dirty money PRECISELY to demonstrate their qualifications to be President, one of which is to ZEALOUSLY represent the COMMON folks of this country, the 1% corporate elitist-types on Wall.Street be damned!!

The same goes for accepting dirty PAC money. Hat's off to all of Bernie's fellow Democrats - - who have followed his lead and, thus, shown their qualifications to be President in this respect also.

PACs do not donate directly to candidates. These "Wall Street millions" are donations from individuals, as you know. Bernie has also raised money from Wall Street and corporations, as some of his donors work in corporations and on Wall Street. He also benefits from PAC money.

your favorite candidate who said in an article in the Hill, entitled "Kamala Harris will no longer accept corporate PAC money":

"Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) said Monday she will no longer accept donations from corporate PACs, the latest in a string of progressive Democrats who have vowed to do so.

Harris told the hosts of “The Breakfast Club” radio show in New York that she was caught off guard when asked recently at a town hall about accepting corporate donations. She said at the time it "depends."

“So I’ve actually made a decision since I’ve had that conversation that I’m not going to accept corporate PAC checks,” she said Monday.

Following Bernie's lead - who's NEVER caught "off guard" - all the other qualified "string of progressive candidates" have said the exact same thing... they have vowed to no longer accept corporate PAC money.

So, please, feel free to take this issue up with these candidates, who are eminently qualified when it comes to swearing off corporate PAC money.

there is very little substance--only the fantasy of some socialist utopia. I'm surprised that Jane and Bernie ever bought homes--their beliefs are more consistent with those who shun reality and live in co-ops, but then beg people at the grocery store to donate money because they are too lazy to get jobs.

I keep requesting info that lists his legislative accomplishments, but so far, nothing.

All I'm saying is, one might think that anyone who had spent 30 years in Washington would have something to show for it. (And I'm talking about things that have real meaning in the lives of everyone... not dedicating Post Office names, and the like.)

Where's the leadership? Where's the cooperation and compromise that gets things done? Finding common ground means PROGRESS, right? Grandstanding and boasting, well, not so much progress happens there.

By the way, you know that thing about how BS "votes with Democrats 99% of the time" ... I'm sure you've heard it. His supporters repeat it regularly. Well... turns out that IT'S NOT TRUE. In reality, BS does NOT "vote with the Democrats 99% of the time". It's closer to 80%.

So he only lost support by doing this. I doubt anyone who didn't already support him will say "hey, I want to be a part of that".

Thu Mar 21, 2019, 08:27 AM
Mar 2019

and how in those key 3 states alone the # of Sanders' voters who believed his corrupt Democrats/corrupt Hillary theme and refused to vote Democrat was bigger than our margin of loss? And that doesn't even count all the other left-leaners who didn't vote at all because they lost their belief in us after hearing too much from him and Russia?

Sanders' poisonous effect on the election was only one of many factors that each alone would have made all the difference in this election, but it was also felt across the nation, not in just three states, where an expected giant blue wave was destroyed and corrupted by lies into widespread Republican victories.

But now the important thing to realize is that it could happen all over again and must not be allowed to. Many knowledgeable political scientists believe our democracy itself is in danger and that we might not have another chance to save it.

Democracy under Democratic Party leadership OR white nationalist authoritarian government. That's the choice.

I wanted no candidate from 16 to run. However as we have discussed, I will vote for Sen. Sanders should he make it to the general. His campaign picks make me worry that we will end up with division, but I truly believe progressives and others who know that the only way to get Trump out is to vote Democratic will do exactly that no matter who the candidate is. You and I we have talked about this before. I actually voted for Sen. Sanders in Ohio. But was very angry by the end of the General and some of the stuff after that has not set well with me. man or woman win. I am a political junkie and generally enjoy every election. This one frightens me though because I think Trump could win. I look at the 18 mid-terms and I see moderates elected. We run on what Trump will call 'socialist' policies, we lose. This is why although I am a progressive, I will vote for a moderate in 20. I want to win the general. Sen. Sanders is not on my primary list because though you might think it unfair, I simply can't get over the bitterness of 16.

He would have my vote in a general of course. And I think if during the convention it goes to a second vote...supers need to vote for the person with the most delegates...no smoky rooms and no backroom deals because....no one wins if there is a brokered convention except Trump and Republicans.

Feel free to debate substantive policy differences on how best to bring those progressive agenda items into fruition, or to bring up past votes or positions that indicate the political leanings and, thus, likelihood of a certain candidate to fight hard for that progressive agenda, that's fair game... but to personally attack a fellow Democratic candidate, like Bernie, who has spent his entire political life fighting to help common folks and those in desperate need, caught up in a rigged system imposed by the 1%-ers and their ilk, that's over the line.

Bernie has promoted his entire political life. Bashing Bernie, his staff and supporters, instead, only serves to sow seeds of division.

I, for one, will support and vote for the eventual nominee, but, history has shown us not everyone will. The last thing we need now is a bitter primary fight that leads to another "PUMA movement." That's why it's critically important to emphasize the progressive values our favorite candidates SHARE as Democrats and unite around the one, most important goal that should bind us... defeating the POS Traitor-in-Chief currently occupying the White House.

55. Washington Post-A Bernie Sanders supporter (and journalist) had a secret he kept from his readers
Thu Mar 21, 2019, 12:17 AM
Mar 2019

A reporter’s undisclosed connection to a political candidate would constitute a breach of journalistic ethics. The basic rule is that journalists are supposed to be free of any personal or financial relationship with those they cover or comment on, even an “informal” relationship. Alternatively, reporters are obligated to at least disclose such relationships so that readers or viewers can evaluate the integrity of the reporting for themselves.

Sirota, 43, not only didn’t mention his relationship with Sanders’s campaign but apparently sought to erase his long history of attacks against Sanders’s opponents, according to the Atlantic. Just hours before his hiring by Sanders was announced, Sirota deleted about 20,000 or so of his tweets. He suggested that the timing of the mass deletion was coincidental, telling the Atlantic that his account was scrubbed by an “autodeleter” that periodically and automatically removes his posts.

It remains unclear how long Sirota advised the Sanders camp before his hiring. Neither Sirota nor Sanders’s representatives responded to multiple requests for comment on Wednesday.

Sirota’s vitriolic tweets and blog posts also appear to be at odds with the ethos of the Sanders’s campaign, which has stressed that it will “respectfully engage” other Democratic candidates. His hiring as a speechwriter also appears to be an acknowledgment that Sanders, whose extemporaneous public remarks have been a sign of his authenticity, will at times be scripted like other politicians.

151. Bernie just hired a past partitioner of racial attacks.
Sat Mar 23, 2019, 01:50 AM
Mar 2019

Bernie Sanders first hired his new speechwriter, David Sirota, 20 years ago, shortly after Sirota was fired from a mayoral campaign for his connection to a bogus website that promoted a racially charged quotation, taken out of context, of a black opponent.

In 1999, in Philadelphia, there was a crowded Democratic primary for mayor. Three of the candidates were African American: John White, Dwight Evans, and John Street, all of them friends going back years. But the race got intense early, and David Sirota, then working as the deputy campaign manager for Evans, was part of an effort to cut down White’s support: creating a bogus website, purporting to be the official home page of the White campaign, and using it to promote a racially charged quotation, deliberately taken out of context.

The ruse was soon discovered. Evans, who is now a Democratic member of Congress, fired Sirota. He called Sirota “overzealous” at the time. “I do not want this race to be about race,” Evans said in 1999, calling the site in question an example of “dirty tricks.” The website took a comment that White had made in a broader interview with a Spanish-language weekly, Al Día, and presented the line as if it were an anti-white slogan: “The black and the brown, if we unite, we’re going to control this city.” Local reporters in Philadelphia received emails directing them to the site as though it were part of John White’s campaign.

White, according to news reports at the time, was speaking about the increased political clout African Americans and Latinos could have if they worked together as a coalition. That was February. By the fall, Sirota was hired as the press secretary for Bernie Sanders, then in the House. He was hired by Sanders’s then–chief of staff, Jeff Weaver, who went on to manage Sanders’s 2016 presidential campaign and remains a senior adviser to the 2020 campaign.
