NEW POLL: Nearly half of Americans think Democrats have moved too far to the left

Nearly half of respondents in a new poll said the Democratic Party has moved "too far left."
The survey from Quinnipiac University Poll released Wednesday found that 47 percent of registered voters polled said the Democratic Party has moved “too far left;" however, most of those voters identified as Republicans.

The poll found that 79 percent of Republicans surveyed said the Democrats had moved too far left, but only 17 percent of Democrats agreed. Just under half, or 48 percent, of independents said the party has drifted too far left.

There was also a gap by gender, with 57 percent of male respondents saying the party was too far to the left and only 37 percent of women saying the same. Similarly, the view was split by race, with 53 percent of white voters polled agreeing, 33 percent of Hispanic voters and just 17 percent of black voter

Moderate and centre left Dems would be considered mildly centre RW in many European countries, and centrists and especially Blue Dog and Problem Solver Democratic members would be considered regular RW to even the farthest right on the 'regular' RW parties.

The political prism in the US is so distorted vis-a-vis most of the rest of the advanced Western world. My Euro/UK politics are much to the left of my American politics, simply because of the impossibly of getting an actual left, social democratic (NOT democratic socialist, which doesn't exist for ANY federally elected politician, Bernie is 100% falsely mis-labelling there) agenda passed here under the current RW-gerrymandered, voter suppressed and overall propagandised system.

The AVERAGE US Rethug would be considered a completely wild-eyed ultra radical RWer in much of Europe (and elsewhere), and the MAGAT types, say the farthest RW third of the party, would be,(say here in Sweden), charged with hets mot folkgrupp ie. verbal hate crimes against people and booted out of the Riksdag (our parliament). The same for many other counties. Fox News was on here a long time ago, and was eventually banned for hate speech.

Every time a Republican blusters about his superior firepower (and it's almost always a man), I tell him it means nothing if we now know who exactly to shoot when they get their precious civil war. Gun-owning Democrats tend to keep quiet about their arsenals, and I like to keep Republicans guessing about who else is armed. It's food for thought for them, you know? 115. Choices for Financing Medicare for All: A Preliminary Analysis
Tue Oct 29, 2019, 03:14 PM
Oct 2019

This is from a non-partisan think group that is well respected http://www.crfb.org/papers/choices-financing-medicare-all-preliminary-analysis

Proposals to adopt single-payer health care in the United States have grown in popularity in recent years, as numerous lawmakers and presidential candidates have embraced Medicare for All. However, few have grappled with how to finance the new costs imposed on the federal government. By most estimates, Medicare for All would cost the federal government about $30 trillion over the next decade. How this cost is financed would have considerable distributional, economic, and policy implications.

In the coming months, the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget will publish a detailed analysis describing numerous ways to finance Medicare for All and the consequences and trade-offs associated with each choice. This paper provides our preliminary estimates of the magnitude of each potential change and a brief discussion of the types of trade-offs policymakers will need to consider.

We find that Medicare for All could be financed with:

A 32 percent payroll tax
A 25 percent income surtax
A 42 percent value-added tax (VAT)
A mandatory public premium averaging $7,500 per capita – the equivalent of $12,000 per individual not otherwise on public insurance
More than doubling all individual and corporate income tax rates
An 80 percent reduction in non-health federal spending
A 108 percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) increase in the national debt
Impossibly high taxes on high earners, corporations, and the financial sector
A combination of approaches

Each of these choices would have consequences for the distribution of income, growth in the economy, and ability to raise new revenue. Some of these consequences could be balanced against each other by adopting a combination approach that includes smaller versions of several of the options as well as additional policies.

After all, why should we care if republicans think the Dem party has moved too far left. Are we expecting them to vote for our candidates en masse? Hardly.

Take out that segment and you have data thars actually useful. Not so likely to get clicks, though.

Fri Oct 25, 2019, 05:17 PM
Oct 2019

I find it intriguing how the message is framed. There is no mention about what percentage feel the country has moved too far to the right. Moreover, if reframed, it says that 21 percent of Republicans believe that the country has not moved too far to the left, that the overwhelming majority (83%) of Democrats believe that it has moved too far to the right, and that 52% of all independents do not believe that it has gone too far to the left.

Link to the latest poll
https://poll.qu.edu/national/release-detail?ReleaseID=3645

Think I find interesting is that 43% of the population believes we've moved too far to the right, only marginally less than the 47% who feel it's gone too far to the left. This isn't that surprising - the Democratic party overall is still fairly pluralistic.

Looking at the overall poll though, you can tell that the Hill definitely cherry picked its statistics - dig into the details and it looks pretty bad for the Republicans at this stage all across the board.

90. There are more moderates and slightly liberals in the party compared to extreme liberals
Fri Oct 25, 2019, 07:20 PM
Oct 2019

Former vice president Joe Biden is embracing his role as the leading moderate in the 2020 Democratic presidential primary field. He has at times adopted an almost curmudgeonly tone about his opponents’ embrace of more progressive policies, preferring a nostalgia for the way things were back in the good old days of, say, 2015.

It’s an approach that, at first, seems at odds with where the party is going. We’ve noted previously that Democrats are increasingly likely to identify themselves as liberals, a trend that probably helps explain why so many of the 2020 candidates have embraced progressive positions — and why more progressive candidates have entered the race.

Polling, though, suggests that this may not be a foolproof strategy. For one thing, a crowd of more progressive candidates (an admittedly nebulous designation) will compete for the same voters, freeing Biden to vacuum up support from moderates. But polling also shows that Democrats overall aren’t necessarily prioritizing a candidate who espouses progressive policies. The data below are from a recent CNN-SSRS poll: More Democrats think it’s important for a nominee to work with Republicans than to support liberal policies.

for many other nations here in the EU. I am in Sweden for post grad uni and so many US Democratic 'centrists' would be on the farthest right of the mainstream centre right party, Nya Moderaterna (New Moderates, what use to be called the Conservatives.) The vast majority of Rethugs would be off the charts rightwing. Hell, even SD (Sverigedemokraterna, aka the Sweden Democrats, the far right nationalist party) might not take some as even they are still mostly for a fairly expansive welfare state.

not by all who would benefit—at time when basics are threatened and underfunded.

We are told the plan is to Tax the rich and stop wars. Get it from the defense budget. Crap. That talk is for 60s college hippies. The reality is higher taxes for reinventing the wheel, giving to the rich along with working class, and bad prioritizing. I mean student debt comes before helping folks save their homes from foreclosure? Before children’s lunch programs? Low income family needs?

200 billion for the opioid crisis is a crisis de jour plan that sounds good, but half that amount is probably more than what is needed when rehabs are often not the answer and many states already fund Suboxone treatment and therapy. Mandate that they all do. Alcohol is still America’s number one drug problem.

How bout sensible plans and doable, whatever ideology candidates want to call it. But again, ideology is all the rage.

119. It's based on the data reported in the OP.
Wed Oct 30, 2019, 03:50 PM
Oct 2019

"There was also a gap by gender, with 57 percent of male respondents saying the party was too far to the left and only 37 percent of women saying the same. Similarly, the view was split by race, with 53 percent of white voters polled agreeing, 33 percent of Hispanic voters and just 17 percent of black voter..."

I'll modify my assertion to say that 17% of black voters agreed that the party was too far to the left. But it certainly sounds like several groups of voters who are marginalized by systemic discrimination (women, black and Latinx voters) are not in agreement with the proposition that Democrats are now too far left. Voters who are white and male are significantly more likely to find disfavor from the party's embrace of "left" policies.

121. Florida Democrats want a moderate.
Wed Oct 30, 2019, 06:30 PM
Oct 2019

A group of current and former elected Democratic officials in Broward County said Tuesday they’d like to see their party nominate former Vice President Joe Biden for president in 2020.

Their second choice in a straw vote is Pete Buttigieg, the mayor of South Bend, Ind.

They definitely don’t want either U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts or U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, the progressive candidates who are performing near the top of public opinion polls, along with Biden.....

But they believe the Democratic Party’s overriding goal of defeating President Donald Trump can be best achieved by nominating a candidate — like Biden or maybe Buttigieg — who they believe can better to appeal to swing voters in a handful of states that will decide the election.

132. Michigan Democrats show less enthusiasm for progressive policies
Mon Nov 18, 2019, 01:57 PM
Nov 2019

Democratic enthusiasm to vote against President Donald Trump in the 2020 election could be matched by Republicans motivated to oppose a more progressive nominee.

At least that’s the historic argument for why a moderate Democrat could have the advantage in swing states, said Matt Grossman, director of Michigan State University’s Institute for Public Policy and Social Research. While Democrats consider which of their candidates is best positioned to beat Trump, recent polling suggests Democrats in Michigan and other general election battlegrounds are motivated to vote but less enthusiastic about progressive policy ideas.,,,,

A majority of Democratic voters in Michigan put Medicare for All at the bottom of their health care priorities, the KFF survey found. Union members have also expressed issues with losing health benefits they fought for over decades of negotiations with employers.
Candidates in the moderate lane like Biden and South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg favor expanding coverage under the Obama-era Affordable Care Act. Biden and Buttigieg support giving people the option of buying-in to Medicare but don’t want to expand it to everyone.

Biden’s campaign has come out swinging against Warren’s Medicare for All plan, saying it’s too costly and would hike taxes on the middle-class.

Trump and other Republicans call Medicare for All a “socialist" policy, portraying the plan as reckless and expensive. The “danger” of socialism is poised to get a lot of mileage in Republican campaign messaging during the next year, Grossman said.

For example, how many Americans in this poll think that Democrats are too far left socially with regard to gay and transgender rights? Do we really want to follow such Americans or lead them to a better understanding of what equality means. How many of those polled who said that Democrats had moved too far left are Repubicans?
