Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumWhich of our candidates would do best against Romney?
Pure speculation, of course, but if you ask me Romney smells blood in the republican waters and still wants to be president. He would have as good a chance as anyone to win the nomination if Trump was out of the picture.

(58,785 posts)NO woman since Romney would have special appeal for those threatened and even angered by just too much women's equality. Sanders would also be a certain loser; supporters are refusing to consider what would happen when the RW and MSM turned on him huge in the GE.

(11,986 posts)That piece of the equation may change if Romney were to pick a woman as his running mate, which I think would be a serious possibility.

(58,785 posts)talking about would support a female VP over president and point to it as proof that they're not bigots, claiming that a female Democratic candidate didn't speak to their concerns and was also just too "unlikable" and "untrustworthy" to vote for. Been there before, and not long ago at all.
I'm not saying the problem should slam doors on nominating a woman and certainly not that we should pander to bigots (including some women) against the interests of half the nation, only that it's real and its big.

(11,986 posts)If you think you fight same with same, I think Buttigieg or maybe even Klobuchar would be stronger against Romney than Biden would be. Biden biggest advantage is his experience, but we have seen in the past that experience doesn't count for a lot in presidential elections. (Carter, Reagan, Clinton, GW Bush, Obama, and Trump ALL won over candidates with more experience). I'm not sure what else Biden really offers over Romney besides, well, being the Democratic alternative.
OTOH, Buttigieg and Klobuchar are spared the baggage of a long voting record that can be picked at, they speak with more clarity, and they are fresh faces who would bring something different to the White House, despite basically pretty moderate positions. I'm not sure Klobuchar has enough charisma, though her last debate performance was her best.
If you think you fight by going with different rather than your version of the same, then I guess you look at Sanders or Warren. This would be my inclination, to go after the Bain Capital guy with the antithesis of that. I think I'd go with Warren, but it's not an easy call. It would be a dramatic race, that's for sure.

(13,058 posts)And I think we need to keep our focus on Trump. He might be the only Republican with a chance to win in 2020 and of course we can't let that happen.
