Is the Biden Bubble About to Burst?

Is the Biden Bubble About to Burst?

https://newrepublic.com/article/154835/biden-bubble-burst

But that lead may be illusory. There’s a growing sense that Biden is something of a starter nominee, a candidate that voters can glom onto while they search for someone who better suits their values. “I did not meet one Biden voter who was in any way, shape or form excited about voting for Biden,” Patrick Murray, who heads the Monmouth University Polling Institute (which recently released a poll giving Biden a significant lead in Iowa) told The New York Times. “They feel that they have to vote for Joe Biden as the centrist candidate, to keep somebody from the left who they feel is unelectable from getting the nomination.” JoAnn Hardy, who heads the Cerro Gordo County Democrats, concurred, telling the Times, “He’s doing OK, but I think a lot of his initial strength was name recognition. As the voters get to meet the other candidates, he may be surpassed soon. I would not be surprised.”

primary today, I would vote for:

Jeb Bush only led nationally from May to July - losing his lead the second Trump entered the race.

Biden has led nationally in every single poll since he announced back in April.

I keep hearing, 'it's a matter of time' and he's now been running for president for four months and his lead has been remarkably stable. So...

I don't care if you like Biden or not - that point was silly. Biden has an extensively solid lead both nationally and in Iowa. Hillary led nationally but was much weaker in Iowa in 2008. And even then, Hillary still nearly won the nomination in 2008.

If I were to vote in a presidential

The parallels I was referring to are the fact that both Jeb(!) and Biden are well-known front runners with established political acumen that don't have much enthusiasm surrounding their campaigns. We'll see what ends up happening, but I suspect Biden won't be the nominee in the end.

If I were to vote in a presidential

There just isn't any realistic parallel to make your point, which is why it's silly. Biden has literally led in every single national poll going back to the beginning of the year. There were multiple polls in 2016 where Jeb was not leading. In fact, from January 1st, to July 9th, out of 24 national polls, Bush led in only 10. Biden has led in literally every national poll going back to January.

The comparison is just not the same. It's a silly comparison. If you don't think Biden will be the nominee, fine, but you should offer more than a very weak comparison as proof of why you believe this.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:

Unlike Jeb, Biden is also an extremely popular and beloved politician with a resume that far outstrips any of his rivals.

And, of course, Biden’s job-specific qualifications far exceed Jeb’s.

I can’t imagine Jeb ever making as profound and compelling an address as Biden delivered in Iowa

Biden Slams 'Irrational' Foreign Policy as Trump Departs for G-7
Joe Biden offered a prebuttal to Donald Trump’s statements on economics and foreign policy on Friday before the president was due to leave the country for the Group of Seven meeting, at which point Biden said he’d refrain from critical commentary.

“This week, in the lead-up to the G-7 in France, President Trump has continued his irrational and self-defeating campaign to make America less secure and less respected in the world,” the former vice president said in a statement provided to Bloomberg News.

Biden, who spent decades on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has sought to use his extensive foreign policy experience as a cudgel against Trump and as a distinguishing factor with his many Democratic opponents.

the greatest part, so far. But we haven't had a single primary yet.

And I don't think Biden helped himself today when he told his audience to imagine that Obama had been assassinated.

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/06/22/us/politics/black-voters-south-carolina-democrats-primary.html

McCLELLANVILLE, S.C. — Joseph R. Biden Jr. enjoys a sizable advantage with black voters in South Carolina right now, and not just at lunch tables where they discuss candidates over freshly caught shrimp and fried fish. Recent polls have shown him with support from about 50 percent of African-American voters in the state.

It is what elevates Mr. Biden above his 22 Democratic rivals; though he is often portrayed as a champion of the white working class, he is viewed by many black voters as the play-it-safe choice who could best recreate the multiracial Obama coalition.

But many young black voters are drawn to Elizabeth Warren and her plan to cancel student debt, while others prefer Bernie Sanders and his calls for systemic change. Some black women like Kamala Harris’s leadership style and her personal story as a graduate of Howard University. And some black men are sizing up Cory Booker, who employs the cadences of the black church in his stump speech.

The myriad priorities of black voters in South Carolina and across the nation suggests that, Mr. Biden’s current advantage notwithstanding, the pursuit of African-American support in 2020 will be far more competitive than in 2016 and 2008. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama won more than 80 percent of black votes in the South Carolina primary, and were propelled to the nomination in large part because African-Americans in subsequent states mirrored their counterparts here.
