Julian Castro and the Animal Rights Movement

Sometimes the policy offerings of the many Democratic presidential candidates begin to blur in their similarity. But Julián Castro has taken a step that distinguishes him from the crowd, and taps a potentially important constituency: animal lovers. Earlier this week he released a comprehensive “animal welfare plan,” as Vox reports:

The Democrat’s Protecting Animals and Wildlife (PAW) plan, released on Monday, includes an array of bold proposals, including making animal cruelty a federal crime.

Castro frames his plan as a way of sticking it to President Donald Trump and as the solution to Trumpian problems. The PAW plan would strengthen the Endangered Species Act, which Trump has weakened. And it would stop Americans from importing animal trophies that result from big-game hunting — something Donald Trump Jr. is known to love.

“The president does not care about animals and his cruel actions prove it. He has put corporate profits over living creatures and individual fortunes over our future,” Castro said. “This groundbreaking plan will improve the treatment of animals around the country and the world, and undo Donald Trump’s damage.”

***********This guy impresses me more every time I read about him.

include the wild horses on our BLM land cuz Trump's budget proposals have included "humane euthanasia" of these horses. They are an iconic symbol of what's part of U.S. and he wants to cull them because he wants to rid the U.S. of everything not Russia??

Impeach and GOTV.

2. That's one of my key issues, which I never believed would be voiced by a presidential candidate.

Cudos to Castro! I may switch my presidential preference on this basis alone, but not willing to go that far, yet.

I know little of Castro beyond what I've seen in the debates, where he did not inspire me, but I'm glad to hear someone talking about animal rights.

I am thinking there is a lot of hypocrisy in his statement.
Yes, I will vote for any democrat in the general election. I am just pointing out the hypocrisy.

There are a lot of issues and although I am a vegan it's not my only issue. I am just pointing out the hypocrisy of putting people in prison if they torture one animal but ignoring the billions that suffer horrifically because animals are "tasty".

Slapping down tRump's discarding of endangered species laws, trying to remove mustangs from our public lands, allowing the import of big game trophies. The list goes on and on.

I firmly believe tRump hates animals as much as he hates immigrants and minorities.

I don't see Castro as president, but I do like his ideas. Would he consider another cabinet post?
