Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumBiden has "tapped into the most powerful message for Democrats."
As this article goes on to point out, anything can happenalthough Biden is no Mondale.
To me, Bidens message is far more compelling than the centerpiece of other campaigns, plans and policies, which may never be implemented, and though key to the progressive agenda, are not yet favored by a wider swath of our party or the electorate at large. Bidens message transcends the policy wars to speak to the heart of Americanss across politics positions.

CNN) Joe Biden is back in a double-digit lead in the race for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, up 7 points since late June.
That's the finding in the latest CNN poll, released Tuesday, showing Biden's lead about where it was when he entered the race, and before the two rounds of Democratic debates. Time has passed, but for all the noise, it seems, the fundamentals of the race remain the same. Biden's standing in this poll confirms that he remains very popular among core Democratic party constituencies, particularly African Americans and older Americans. Biden has also tapped into the most powerful message for Democrats: This race is about a battle for the soul of our country -- America can't survive another four years of Donald Trump, and Biden has successfully convinced Democrats that he is their best chance to win. For most Democrats, that's what this whole race is about.

(10,828 posts)this primary, this election is not being fueled by policy positions. It's all about who can win, beat the hell out of Donald Trump and his enablers and steer the Ship of State into smoother, brighter water. After three years of Trump, the electorate is chaos weary, genuinely worried about how much more damage the country can withstand.
The old adage has always been: Democrats fall in love while Republicans fall in line.
This year is different.
Heard a pundit say just yesterday how surprising it was to see such a large swath of the Democratic electorate leaning in with their heads, rather than their hearts.
Biden managed to nail that very thing in his ad yesterday: People know in their bones that this election is different, a whole other ballgame, aka A Fight for the Soul of the Country. And that last detail was the insight that Joe Biden and Joe Biden alone nailed on Day 1 of his candidacy.
We are in an existential struggle. Joe Biden gave that acknowledgment voice with a calm, steady approach:
We can beat this back. We can do this.

(43,146 posts)They all have policies, sure, and they present them in different ways. But all zing Trump, and Beto, Biden, and Warren in particular assail Trump on character. Beto warns on Trump's extremism, racism, even nazism, and Biden on character itself, Warren on policy and Trump's distortions of policy.
In my view it takes an older person to truly read every last nuance of personality and the soul of others. That's why I think this field is a lot narrower than the next round of debates indicate. We're almost there.
I think we're better off with our older candidates because it gives Trump no room to gain any subliminal pity for his faltering mind and body.

(22,569 posts)So this: "Biden has also tapped into the most powerful message for Democrats: This race is about a battle for the soul of our country -- America can't survive another four years of Donald Trump, and Biden has successfully convinced Democrats that he is their best chance to win." needs to be near the top of your post rather than having to search for it is the middle of it.
This race is the Democrat's race to lose and we already have all the excuses lined up already for a Trump win: those big, bad Russians and those underhanded and scheming Republicans.
But if we all pull together and support the nominee of the Democratic Party without reservation or purity tests then we will prevail.
The nightmare might be over but the recovery will take many years. But we will also need to survive the months from when Trump is defeated and he leaves or is dragged from office because he will be doing lots of evil and mischief during that time.

(10,828 posts)And that aftermath is something that really worries me. The recovery will take time meaning people need to be patient. But worse, I don't see Donald Trump going into That Goodnight willingly or easily. I can imagine him creating as much chaos and confusion as possible when he loses, trying to set a match to the entire government infrastructure that did not support him, vote for him, adore him.
We're going to need a seasoned hand to handle that as well as everyone on board to push back against what could become another grim nightmare. Too many loose cannons out there who have bought Trump's con hook, line and sinker.
Yes, it is worrisome. We'd be fools not to be prepared for the worst while hoping for the best.
What a disaster this man is!

(560 posts)Yes there are policies that disqualify candidates for us. And there are policies that make candidates more or less attractive.
But we vote for candidates. And as impressed as I am with Elizabeth Warren, it's actually in spite of many of her policy positions; it's because of her ability to articulate them clearly, intelligently, and with conviction.
