Shaun King speaks out on Bernie Sanders

Why Bernie Sanders’s History of Racial Justice Activism Matters
BY SHAUN KING

https://jacobinmag.com/2018/06/bernie-sanders-civil-rights-movement-activism

...Bernie loved Dr King. And long before we used the phrase, Bernie had the notion that he needed to use his own white privilege to fight back against racism and bigotry and oppression and inequality. And that desire to hold this country to a higher standard began to well up in Bernie as a young student at the University of Chicago. He became the chairman of the university chapter of the Congress for Racial Equality (CORE) and merged the group with SNCC — the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. Bernie literally helped lead the first known sit-in in at the University of Chicago, where thirty-three students camped outside of the President’s office — protesting segregating housing on campus.

Though Sanders risked his neck working for desegregation and racial justice, apparently that doesn't matter because later he moved to Vermont!
Sanders marched with MLK -- but then he moved to Vermont, so he's suspect.

to strongly campaign for and with a Democratic candidate running against a Republican incumbent who is shipping his home state's incarcerated (disproportionately POC) to a for-profit prison thousands of miles from family and support systems, it is unlikely that the politician will do the really hard work of drafting and shepherding meaningful legislation through all the steps it takes to get it enacted.

31. I wonder why BS didn't campaign at length in Vermont for Christine Hallquist
Sun Aug 18, 2019, 02:41 PM
Aug 2019

the way he did for out of state challengers in Democratic primaries and out of state gubernatorial candidates in 2018.

An incumbent Republican governor who vetoed an increase in the minimum wage, the creation of a paid family leave program, and who contracted with a for-profit prison to house some of Vermont's incarcerated in a Mississippi hell hole also won on Tuesday. (While POC only make up 1% of VT's state population, they make up 11% of the prison population.)

Among the Democrats who lost their November 2018 races was the Democratic candidate in the Vermont gubernatorial race, Christine Hallquist, the nation's first transgender candidate for governor. She ran on a platform that included a $15 an hour minimum wage, the creation of a paid family medical leave program, working with like-minded states to implement universal healthcare cooperatives, and protecting collective bargaining and workers rights.

Hallquist, raked in early endorsements from EWarren, JBiden, HDean, and Joe Kennedy followed by BSanders, CBooker, and President Obama, had been especially outspoken on Vermont's housing of out of state prisoners in a for-profit prison in Mississippi.

I was aware that Vermont has a disproportional rate of incarcerated people of color, but I wasn't fully aware of the extent of the need for criminal justice and prison reform in the Green Mountain State. Like all Americans, the people of Vermont deserve better.

It's bewildering that BS was unavailable to campaign at length to remedy the very real problems in his home state by helping to elect Vermont Democrat Christine Hallquist. Why were the governor's races in Georgia, Florida, and Michigan prioritized over the well-being of his own constituents in Vermont?

Jacobin Accused of Reneging on Wage Deal in British Takeover of Tribune Magazine

The purchase of the paper seemed like an ideal takeover for Sunkara linking his viral socialist publication in America with the struggling legacy British paper.

snip====================================================================

The event received much fanfare, however underneath the takeover of the storied British publication by the American publisher, media workers activists say that he’s done it by exploiting those, who produce content for socialist publications.

Workers say that Sunkara promised that if workers took a settlement of only 70% of the back wages that they were owed that he would give them future work after taking over the publication. However, Sunkara in a statement to Payday confirmed that he would not bring the staffers back.

at least by Democrats, no matter when they occurred.

You can respect acts of conscience and still not support the candidacy for the nomination. That's a simple and reachable standard. And then the discussion can focus on the actual issues in front of us.

White supremacy is a real and present threat. There is no candidate in this race that has an unblemished record when it comes to addressing racial inequality consistently, proactively, and inclusively. But there are proposals on the table from every candidate. Why are these discussions so shallow when we're supposed to be the anti-racist party?
