Nina Turner, a 2020 Bernie campaign chair, refused to support Hillary days before the 2016 election.

What does it mean that Bernie allows this from people at the top of his campaign?

How can he have re-hired a woman who didn't care if she helped Trump to win?

I think this should be a deal breaker. If Bernie would hire a campaign co-chair who wouldn't support the Democratic nominee, then we shouldn't support him.

So Bernie Sanders has selected Nina Turner as one of his campaign co-chairs. Here's Nina Turner days before the 2016 US Presidential election saying she's not backing Hillary Clinton.
If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

76. A contemporaneous account of the shocking incident!
Fri Feb 22, 2019, 10:05 AM
Feb 2019
Turner, the 49-year-old former Ohio state senator and DNC member herself, led about 60 supporters that day to the DNC offices to deliver petition signatures supporting the “People’s Platform,” a 2018 policy agenda drafted by Our Revolution in response to the one unveiled that week by party leaders in the House and Senate.

When they arrived, she said, barricades blocked the entrance steps and a handful of DNC staffers stood waiting outside. “I was absolutely stunned,” Turner said.

snip==========================================

A spread of donuts and water had also been set up for the Our Revolution party. Turner took particular issue with the donuts and water, which she called “hand-out trinkets."

They tried to seduce us with donuts and water,” she said. “They’re pompous and arrogant enough to say to the people, 'you’re not good enough to be on our property — and, oh by the way, we’re just gonna hand you donuts and water over the barricade.' That is insulting. Absolutely insulting.”

If you want a big tent - if you want to win - you need someone who can excite the people that feel so disenfranchised that they don't show up to vote. Running to the middle is running right up to the republicans - there is no room there. Its not just left/right. Its the millions that feel their vote doesn't matter - that no political decision will affect their lives.

I think its a great move. Nina sure can get people up on their feet! And if you don't believe that, then you can't possibly believe she got people to reject the Democrats in any meaningful way.

She's working for a Democratic nominee. That should be good news.

Edit - How will you get the Dem-exiters back? You need someone to get them to register. Some reason. Yes, she will be appealing to the people who could see their lives improved by progressive policies - on bothe the left and right. I don't think you have to worry about her getting 3rd way voters to re-register as they most likely didn't leave. Not a judgement call. Just the way the chips landed last time.

Get rid of Trump - by any means - but bonus points if things can improve. With an informed and motivated base.

While there aren't terrific changes, you see the # of independants drop every year there is an election. And even 1 point can mean that much more in enthusiasm to vote.

Keeping the party united is key if you don't want to see the big exits to indie post-election. One interesting anomoly - not a big rush to indie in 2000 through 2003. Gains for the dems. Perhaps chill a bit on the war drum stuff re. Venezuela?

The Washington Post has articles on the myth of the independent voter but I've used up my free articles for the month. Anyway, here's a piece from The Nation: https://www.thenation.com/article/what-everyone-gets-wrong-about-independent-voters/

Both candidates’ supporters—and Donald Trump—have it mostly wrong. While around four-in-10 voters say they’re independents, very few are actually swing voters. In fact, according to an analysis of voting patterns conducted by Michigan State University political scientist Corwin Smidt, those who identify as independents today are more stable in their support for one or the other party than were “strong partisans” back in the 1970s. According to Dan Hopkins, a professor of government at the University of Pennsylvania, “independents who lean toward the Democrats are less likely to back GOP candidates than are weak Democrats.”

And here's a very thorough analysis from Vox: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.vox.com/platform/amp/2016/1/22/10814522/independents-voters-facts-myths

It coincides with the Democratic Party in places, and does not in others. The Party really shouldn't let him run under the false premise that he's a Democrat. He's not evil. But he's not a member of the Democratic Party. I'm disappointed in the leadership letting this guy in. Then again, if he has a following among Democrats, maybe leadership feels they have to let him run under the Dem Party banner.

Actions always speak louder than words. If Sanders is sincere in his intent to run as a bonafide Democrat this time around, he should be selecting individuals who have demonstrated that they will go on support the party's nominee regardless. changed their minds but not their registration-they don't bother to vote in primaries. I took my life in my hands calling on some during the Obama elections. She has said she will support Greens and even Republicans and has trashed Democrats at every turn. She is a bad choice and supported Stein during 16. She can call herself a Democrat if she chooses but all that means is she requested a Democratic ballot during the last primary she voted in. She was elected in Ohio. I voted for her in both elections. She lost statewide in the second one. Most Democratic Ohioans dislike her for her role in the 16 election and the constant trashing of our party. Again she can call herself what she chooses. But her presence as Sen. Sander's campaign chair combined with Justice Democrat Waleed Shahid's role as campaign chair has cemented my decision not to vote for Sen. Sanders in a primary.

No, criticism of Turner has nothing to do with her race, religion, gender, ideology, or choice of pizza topping. It has to do with her refusal to support Democratic candidates, and equating them with Republicans.

Your implication is fallacious, unsupported, and shameful.

Why is that a double standard?

It's not as if Clinton voters are going to go out and support Jill Stein in the 2020 general.

That would be the BS campaign co-chair Co-Chairperson Senator Nina Turner.

I hope a ballsy journalist asks her,

She also pro-actively and pre-emptively announced that she had been offered (and had turned down) the vice president's spot on Putin apologist Jill Stein's ticket.

A surprised Stein told reporters the next day that her team had vetted several candidates.

Humblebragged about the "honor" of being offered a spot on the Stein's ticket ✔️

Angrily denied her support of the Democratic nominee on national TV ✔️

Reluctant to issue a denial concerning the widespread "rumors" that she voted for Stein in her swing state Ohio ✔️

It's time for the Co-Chairperson-Senator© to stop ducking the questions and to set the record straight.

It's a very simple thing to do. Why won't she do it?

She started the last primary working for Clinton. She was involved with two Clinton Super PAC’s, gave speeches in support of Clinton, and helped fundraiser for her. She saw a positive career move by going over to the Sanders campaign. She then became the Sanders supporter that even most Sanders supporters can’t stand. A true Trump enabler. She sold out and helped Trump as a career move. Not a bit based in ideology or what was best for the country.

Nina's decision was reprehensible but was entirely her own. It is rwrong, imo, to presume that her misguided vote casts aspersions on Senator Sanders. He was not her puppet master. The constant attempts to smear him are as misguided as was Turner's vote. Bernie isn't my first choice this time around, but if we want the other candidates to be treated gently -- as I do-- this isn't the way to encourage party unity.

Part of that would seem to be not to alienate a constituency--in this case, one that beat Sanders in 2016 by nearly 4 million votes--that he will need for victory.

Either he was ignorant of Turner's potential negatives in a Democratic race, or he knew and didn't care. One would have to question if victory is even Sanders's goal with such a move.

56. An analogy on BS and the Democratic Party...
Fri Feb 22, 2019, 12:52 AM
Feb 2019

I grew up in southern Arkansas. Every elected county official and area state legislator was a Democrat. My family was friends with a couple of them who had been politicians for years. They were some of the most conservative people you could ever meet. Anytime you heard many of the others speak, it was the same way. Most were pretty conservative. But, to win elections around there, you had to run as a Democrat.

My grandfather, a Baptist deacon who I once heard say that Huckabee was too liberal, was on the county Democratic committee. No way he'd ever be a Republican!

BS is no more a Democrat than the aforementioned politicians or my grandfather.while I dont think BS will win the nomination, he certainly has no chance without a "D" by his name. And I guess the powers that be are OK letting him have a shot.

It's the darndest thing...oh well.

Do not post support for Republicans or independent/third-party "spoiler" candidates. Do not state that you are not going to vote, or that you will write-in a candidate that is not on the ballot, or that you intend to vote for any candidate other than the official Democratic nominee in any general election where a Democrat is on the ballot. Do not post anything that smears Democrats generally, or that is intended to dissuade people from supporting the Democratic Party or its candidates. Don't argue there is no difference between Republicans and Democrats.

If the only concern is that a Democrat wins over a Republican, without concern for what the core values are of the person who’s running under the Democratic banner, then people will get more of the same. They won’t get change.

We can use California as an example. In California, Democrats control every statewide office, they control the legislature — yet we can’t get Medicare for All passed. The nurses [union is] pushing to get this passed, along with other groups, but we can’t get it passed. That’s not a state controlled by Republicans, it’s a state that’s controlled by Democrats.

Or let’s take New York. In terms of voter access and voter rights, one of the worst states for voter rights in the country. Controlled by Democrats, but we can’t even get the legislature and the Governor and others to move policy that will create an environment where all voters matter.

All I know to do is to fight that much harder for our candidates not of their ilk. We have so many excellent candidates to choose from. Why would we choose a candidate that has said in the past they don't like us and really believe there is no difference between us and the GOP?

Most of our candidates have earner their Democratic stripes claiming to be true Democrats and wearing the battle scars well. Sire there is always room for improvement and more boldness on some fronts. Not supporting HRC last time around was a real deal-breaker for me. They earned my disrespect.

She fought to keep a personal consultant on who made anti immigration pro trump comments after the election. She wanted to make her chief of staff. The board wasn't having it.

https://www.politico.com/story/2018/05/23/our-revolution-sanders-turner-figaro-605876

The Bernie Sanders-inspired Our Revolution has cut ties with group president Nina Turner's personal consultant, following a public airing of anger from board members and staff over past anti-immigrant and pro-Donald Trump comments.

Last Friday, Turner told POLITICO she was "really surprised" to hear the group’s board of directors had complaints about Our Revolution. Earlier this month, however, board members blocked Turner from promoting Figaro to be the group's chief of staff. They had compromised then by allowing Figaro to stay on for a few months as a consultant.

"I do have purview over staffing, and that’s just it," Turner said on Friday.

But Turner's decision to retain Figaro had led to ongoing complaints, in public and private, that she was betraying the values of the progressive organization.

Nina Turner supported Stein in 16 and folks like her cost us the election in my opinion. I am particularly angry and disappointed in her. She supported the greens and Stein over Hillary and basically said she wouldn't support Sherrod Brown even though he is progressive because he supported Hillary...he would have 'earn' his place at the grass roots level. People like her...Our Revolution and Justice Democrats don't work for the good of the party or even the country and will cost us elections if we are not on guard...look at the Feinstein video which was doctored. In my opinion, folks like Turner and Sarandon cost us 16 and now we have a judges that will kneecap a progressive agenda for decades...one these folks claim to support. 222. She invoked MLK when talking about the FBI's raid on Michael Cohen, "going too far."
Tue Apr 30, 2019, 07:45 AM
Apr 2019
It wasn’t the most enthusiastic defense of Cohen, but worth pointing out since Turner is a Democrat and a Bernie Sanders ally. Host Jake Tapper asked her about what she thought about the FBI’s raid on Cohen last Monday. She said it concerned her a “little” and it remained to be seen if there were any abuses, but, she added, “certainly, throughout the history of this country, especially where it comes to African-American folks, I mean, Black Panthers, Dr. King, Malcolm X, and other civil rights freedom fighters. You can see that sometimes the government can go too far in its effort and be skewed one way.”

Again, it wasn’t exactly a defense of Cohen, but for Turner, that was beside the point.

“Dictatorial.” “Arrogant.” “Pompous.” “Superficial.” “Tone-deaf.” “Tone-dead.” “Out of line.” “Insulting” — “absolutely insulting.”

Turner rejected the idea that a new DNC fight would stir up old feelings of division and mistrust. “I want to flip that on its head," she responded. “Why won’t the Democratic Party partner with the progressive left — i.e. Our Revolution?” (Our Revolution has been invited to meetings with progressive groups at the DNC, the last one in July, according to a DNC official, and “they haven’t showed up." The official also noted that Our Revolution and the DNC worked together earlier this year on the party's "unity"-themed tour, headlined by Sanders and Perez.)
