(7,514 posts)She is seen as an economic populist - with the credentials to back that up - not as a socialist as some on here claim. Voters see her as taking on the fat cats and that will play well in the Rust Belt.

(7,514 posts)Right back at you. I like that quote from Netroots and it shows why she got such a strong reception. Her passion and commitment come through - combine that with her policy prowess and we have a great candidate.

(58,785 posts)calling anyone that is a great insult to people who despise and oppose populist movements. Populism does not equate to "the people," representative democracy and liberalism do. And democracies around the planet are in danger of being destroyed by populist movements, including ours.
Populist leaders manipulate malcontents by playing on mindless antagonisms and always call for overthrowing the establishment. Power seekers use this negative appeal to gather followers who often have plenty of of antagonism but are sadly lacking in "intellectual sophistication" (see that thread ). Sanders is an economic populism leader powered by class resentments, Trump a nationalist populism leader powered by tribal fears and hates.
In contrast, Elizabeth is part of the resented establishment, the source of all problems as populist followers are lead to believe, and she plans big from within it. She wants to improve, not destroy and take over its power.

(7,514 posts)That's why they oppose her so vehemently, because she is NOT part of their resented establishment. Labels aren't all-defining as some like to believe. I used the term as short-hand, which perhaps I shouldn't have, but certainly not to define everything she stands for. I think you are painting her and Sanders into corners with your own definitions that aren't as cut and dried as you think.

(58,785 posts)and this one's political meaning is not a matter of faith or opinion.
It has, however, been very misused by both those ignorant of its meaning (no, populism doesn't refer to "the people" ) and notably very often these days by scoundrels misusing it to deceive. Something to look out for. The very first time I see it used wrong, I take a very cool, hard look at the author and question the agenda.
Typically New Yorker-style depiction of the rise of a populist leader and his following:
