Did anyone see the Donnie Deutsch-Lawrence O'Donnell dust up?

Donnie was complaining about how none of the candidates on stage had any hope of beating Trump. O'Donnell took exception with that saying that it was just all meaningless speculation with no value at this point. Donnie got very upset over this telling O'Donnell not to say that about his opinions.

It's not even July 2019 and i'm already sick of hearing Donnie Deutsch's opinions. He markets himself as some kind of Trump whisperer and only he has insight into beating him. It's just odd, and dumb.

35. I just wish that people who dismiss women candidates would spend ten seconds-

examining themselves and asking, "Could it possibly be because she's female?"

They will no doubt stoutly insist, "No!"
But at least maybe they'll think about it next time when they open their mouths to say she's too "shrill" or "aggressive" or "uppity" or "hysterical" or "snooty."

49. He may fear Warren. I think her plans upset the apple cart.

I've liked him on Nicole Wallace' panels. Lately though, he is sounding an alarm about Capitalism vs Socialism that he needs to be educated by Warren on. She could teach him, I bet. I'm convinced Wall Street types are the enemy of the poor. And too many wealthy tv news people are far from poor and more at home on Wall Street. Donny is exposing his lack of empathy.

why that was allowed to happen. He was OK in small doses on Morning Joe, but now he's been giving a megaphone to shout his ideas (generated from his billionaire mindset bubble). When's the last time he actually did a focus panel? What has he done lately that qualifies him as an expert on branding/strategy?

104. I never understood Deutsch's appeal, and still can't figure out how he got his own show

Last edited Thu Jun 27, 2019, 09:30 PM - Edit history (1)

The guy has no political experience that I'm aware of. Deutsch started out in advertising and media branding, so he's obviously pretty good at promoting himself, but that doesn't make him qualified to discuss government or politics. Nevertheless, Donny's been failing upwards for a few years now, so he must have a lot of friends in high places.

Donny was an anchor on MSNBC back in 2010 and was fired after he criticized Keith Olbermann. I'm guessing Deutsch later became a regular panelist on Morning Joe since Scarborough never did seem to get along with Olbermann. Other than his personal relationship with Trump, Cohen and a few other Manhattan sleazeballs, Donnie didn't have much to offer.

Deutsch had a prime-time talk show on CNN in 2013 called "Get to The Point," but it was cancelled after just one week. He also had a comedy series on USA Network in 2015 called "Donny!", with Deutsch playing a fictional version of himself. The series bombed and wasn't renewed.

Now he's dispensing political opinions on his own MSNBC show, and as a contributor on other shows. We'll see how long that lasts.

"In April 2013, Deutsch's prime-time CNN talk show '(Get to) The Point' was cancelled after just one week after the Nielsen Company said the show attracted just 268,000 viewers. The show was also mocked by comedian Jon Stewart on his Comedy Central show."

40. No, we can't get complacent, but...

the country is tired of Trump. I really sense that. Even his cultists are getting slower in their avowals of his perfection. They're tired of having to aver that his idiotic violent rants are like Shakespeare sonnets, that his hair really is natural, that his open salivating around Ivanka is just fatherly devotion, that his inability to remember the words to the national anthem or very basic prayers is a sign of his depth...

They'll still vote for him, but I think the enthusiasm factor is going to mean that some GOPers just stay home, or vote only down-ballot.

One Democrat will emerge from the primaries. That person will be smarter, more compassionate, more intuitive, and way better looking than Trump.

While I would vote for either of them I don't see either of them picking off states that Trump won. They could widen the overall margin compared to 2016, but if they don't improve in Electoral College votes then it doesn't matter.

I'm also concerned that they won't help much in the down ballot races.

And her simple view of restructuring capitalism so it benefits all instead of the fewest will make it hard for GOP to label her a socialist like some fear. Heck, Republicans smear ALL Dems as socialists. Warren has the facts and the talent to explain to voters how Republicans ruined capitalism and that her plans will rescue it and restructure it to work for their families and their towns.

his dismissive tone with Donnie. I felt he could afford to suffer him and simply disagree.

Donnie expresses instincts, and thatís one angle, perhaps as valid as any other since it is far too
early to predict political advantage. But thatís what these post-show programs are about.

Donnieís call is probably as valid or invalid as anyoneís at this stage.

I thought he was Cohenís whisperer.

38. I had same reaction - I think both Deutsch and Lawrence could and should have handled it different

Donnie is a branding and ad guy - he has to of course look at stats, but he is someone who also made his success on instincts. His opinion is purely instinctual and also being someone who on the inside of "knowing" Trump has value in his opinion. But it is just that - an opinion. He could be right. But its not based on anything other than opinion and "gut".

Lawrence is someone who is an intellectual and a commentator basing things on facts. He of course has his own "opinions" but he wants to go based on fact. I think that Lawrence O'Donnell was offended that Donnie Deutsch just dismissed 10 highly qualified candidates based on "opinion" and no fact.

I think that Donnie Deutsch could preface his statements by having been more respectful about the candidates and then stated that his concerns based on knowing Trump are that they can't beat him. Then Lawrence O'Donnell could have stated in a less dismissive way something along the lines that while he knows Donnie knows the "Donald" and is a successful branding expert, that this is strictly opinion and the candidates can take on Donald Trump.

Funny how multimillionaires have the capacity to relate to the public what 'joeblow' on the street thinks about issues. He mentions how the word 'socialism' is held with contempt by the American public. But when people want debt relief for college tuition, and comprehensive quality healthcare as a right for every citizen, they're all in. So enough with the ''radical left'' bullshite.

with any number of candidates. I happen to think Joe Biden is the best choice but itís just not true that heís the only one who can win. Democrats outnumber Republicans in a big way and the demographics are only getting worse every day for them.

Right now, polls show Biden and Sanders with fairly significant leads on Trump. Warren not as much but she also hasnít introduced herself to all of America. Warren tends to be persuasive and can get a lot of Americans to vote for her, I believe.

If the economy tanks, North Carolina, Iowa, Georgia, Texas, and (especially) Arizona could be in play. Itís not an impossible scenario.

It's an unspoken rule of talk show hosts not to criticize each other or be disrespectful when they are giving their opinions.

This is one reason Keith whatshisname was fired. He was disrespectful about Joe Scarborough.

BTW, it helps to hear to varying opinions. If Deutsch thinks what he thinks, you can bet the house that there are many others who thought/think the same thing. Putting your head in the sand isn't helpful.

BTW, my independent relative said much the same thing, when he saw part of the debate last night. I had to agree with him. None of the people on that stage would likely win a GE against Trump, even though I thought that Klobuchar was Presidential and qualified to be President. I don't think America, including Democrats, would vote for her, even though they should.
