How Warren's supporters plan to poach Biden backers

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) has been called a less radical alternative to Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.). Her backers think that's the wrong approach.

Instead of aiming to snag Sanders supporters as the 2020 Democratic primaries ramp up, Warren's allies at the Progressive Change Campaign Committee have said their new "Switch to Warren" initiative will actually zero in on Joe Biden's base. That's because Biden's backers "are ready to bolt," PCCC co-founder Adam Green tells BuzzFeed News, and the group is ready to snatch them for Warren.

Biden secured the top spot in Democratic primary polls even months before he started his campaign, while Warren had a relatively dismal showing after launching late last year. Yet in recent weeks, she's been securing third and even second place showings, breaking Sanders' seemingly solid No. 2 rank.

Earlier speculation suggested Warren was stealing voters from Sanders' ranks. But the PCCC, which has more than 1 million members and has been tied to Warren since her 2012 Senate run, sees it differently. "The two big honeypots for Warren are actually Biden supporters and undecided voters" because they want a candidate who can "inspire voters in the general election," Green told BuzzFeed News. The PCCC has already rounded up some of these Democrats who've abandoned their original candidates for Warren, and is collecting their testimonials for the "Switch to Warren" push that began Monday.

So what? What difference does it make? Those are his initials. It's not "made up" out of whole cloth. It is what it is. Deal with it.

Anyone who tries to "boss" people around and tell anyone what they can (or can't) do will soon discover that the behavior they wish to control only increases. If anyone doesn't like it, I'd recommend they ignore it. If they want it to continue (and grow) then they should keep complaining and scolding and wagging their finger scornfully. (For all the good it will do, eh?)

I think you should stop

They are? Exactly what would my "motives" be? If my "motives" are so "clear" (as you claim) then why not just be honest enough to tell me (and the world) exactly what you believe them to be? What good purpose does the timid and evasive language serve... EXCEPT to hide the possibility that it's not at all "clear" what my "motives" are, and unless someone is a mind reader, making such insinuations is basically a smear against me.

I haven't smeared you. What good purpose does it serve to insult me and treat me in that way? I haven't made it personal with you, but that's how I'm being treated. Why?

Yet you won't say what you think they are. Every indication is that my "motives" (whatever you believe them to be) aren't actually as "clear" as you're claiming. Otherwise there would be a confident proclamation and direct accusation... yet there is none forthcoming. Why is that? Instead, there is only insinuation and insults.

An veiled accusation was made about me, and I called it out. Time to step up to the plate and be direct in whatever it is you want to accuse me of, or... if lacking the courage to do that, then that lets me know you've got nothing... and the insinuation was just a way to smear me without evidence and without making a direct accusation. Why not be forthright enough to speak directly?

Why not call Elizabeth Warren "EW"? Why not call anybody else by their initials? Why only call somebody you don't like by the initials that you know are pejorative that literally nobody else except his detractors are calling him. Not one person I know who has the initials "BS" (I know a few) would appreciate being referred by them, because they know what "BS" means. And I don't appreciate you referring to a Democratic figure as "BS" either, because you know very well what it stands for. Stop being evasive and pleading that you are simply calling him by his initials because that's his name, and own up to the fact you are calling him those initials because you don't like him.

Honest question, if you had the initials "BS" would you appreciate being called by it? I'm guessing not.

And I might even go so far as to predict that if and when Harris, Buttigieg, and Gabbard drop out the majority of their supporters will also migrate to the leading candidate between Sanders and Warren.

There is a lot of that going on here. I keep seeing hit and run posts meant to stir things up and get an argument started. I see lots of very low count posters starting threads and other low count posters jump and start disagreeing and soon they drag in long time posters. The only threads that get any traction around here anymore are "divisive" ones.

If you try and post positive things, they get pushed off the board. It's only going to get worse. People need to remember not to feed the "trolls" and trouble makers. The more attention they get, the more problems they create.

Mon Jun 24, 2019, 12:56 PM
Jun 2019

I do not buy into the premise that Joe Biden's supporters are tilted towards a switch 'because they want a candidate who can inspire voters in the GE'.

Beating Trump is all the inspiration I and other Biden supporters need. And though I like Warren, I'm not convinced she can take down Trump. Without a decisive win in 2020, all bets for the future of the country are off.

This time out, I'm touting the Republican message:

WINNING IS EVERYTHING

In addition, Biden voters want a candidate who will take Trump to the cleaners and return the country to a state of normal. They support Joe Biden because of his long years of experience, his foreign policy chops and his proven ability as President Obama's VP.

We cannot move forward until we shore up what has been broken, weakened. Our basic institutions have taken a battering. The rule of law has been side-stepped. Policies and programs to ensure a better, healthier future have been ravaged.

Fix what's broken first.

If Warren's people are looking to seduce Biden supporters to their camp then it tells me they are very aware that simply appealing to the left flank is not enough. Because the vast majority of the country is left-of-center which is where Joe Biden lives and from where his strength emanates. This is the lane Joe Biden deliberately chose. It appears that other candidates are realizing that wasn't such a dumb choice. Because Math!

I'm not going anywhere.

We've been living in Reagan's country so long, we've forgotten how he did it. When she first ran there, she had really small crowds, she went anywhere to talk to people. Her crowds grew and her television exposure grew and she did not screw that up. If I were Biden, I would worry about her, especially if she dominate the debate on Wednesday the way I expect her to. She is not one to be dismissed, "Nevertheless, she persisted".

I don't know what "baggage" you are talking about. The Indian heritage thing? She has testing to prove that she has that heritage and even one Indian tribal Cheif that criticized her has backed off and is consillatory. Her economic plans? Even business journals have started writing positive stuff about some of her ideas. Her knowledge of high finance? The woman is and has been for years one of the preeminent minds in that area.

What baggage are you talking about? I see none that is significant.

Mon Jun 24, 2019, 01:54 PM

and that is why he has so many supporters.

It is not about policy or detailed programs anymore.

Beating Trump is THE cause. Policy will sort itself out later once Trump is gone.

Senator Warren is fantastic and will make a fine POTUS but she cannot beat Trump. Trump will repeatedly bring up the native American reference from day 1 and hammer it.

Also, the white male preferring independents and blue-collar Democrats will probably not trust Senator Warren but would trust Biden in droves.

I always thought Obama picked him because he wouldn't over shadow the top of the ticket in any way

I don't think biden can win the general....he is thought of as the credit card senator, the 3 strike senator, the Clarence Thomas senator

here in the Midwest anyways

it is too bad we don't have ranked choice voting....the progressive vote being split is the only chance biden has to take the primary...which will give us the weakest general election candidate

of course that is by design

"the progressive vote being split is the only chance biden has to take the primary"

Combine the vote for Sanders and Warren and Biden is still ahead in most areas, including the battleground states and the early-primary states. The math doesn't currently support your assertion.

"he is thought of as the credit card senator, the 3 strike senator, the Clarence Thomas senator"

In the real world, this isn't the case. In the real world, he's seen as Obama's VP. Voters tend to be influenced by the recency effect.

"of course that is by design "

The nominee is chosen by Democrats. The process is not "designed" to do anything other than determine who Democrats (and some independents and Republicans, in open primary states) prefer for their nominee. Same as it is most cycles.

the party there looked around for "better" democrats to run against him. She worked her ass off meeting people all over the state, soon she was the only logical democrat and she beat Scott Brown, who was pretty popular.

Seeing her on the national stage, the thing that I like about her is she is down to earth, is a fighter and she is very fucking smart. She learns fast and then guts her opponents. Honestly, her on a debate stage with Trump should cause republicans to shit themselves at night.

Mon Jun 24, 2019, 01:57 PM
Jun 2019

Or why they're switching. No doubt, a few are coming from Biden supporters, but I suspect most of her new supporters are coming from down the candidate list and some from Sanders.

But, they don't know. All they have is the polls, and the polls aren't asking that question, at least so far. You can sort of see it by watching who is losing ground and who is gaining it, but even that doesn't tell you why people are moving.

Biden seems to be pretty stable, so far. I haven't seen any new poll results today, so I don't know what happened over the weekend and after the SC convention talks.

Ignore this sentence and you miss the wjole reason for the strategy. They are going after Biden voters not because they are ready to bolt, but because that's where the votes are. Sort of like why bank robbers rob banks.

The strategy is also based on what's been happening lately with Warren. The more people listen to her, the more they like her. If so, then getting her message to Biden voters can snag her voters who may not have considered her before.
