“Don’t be one of those people I catch calling our president nasty names,” Booker said.
“I’m serious. How can you think that you’re going to beat darkness by stealing darkness? If Nelson Mandela can love his jailers, if Martin Luther King can love Bull Connor—we’ve got to be people of love!”

****************************************************************************

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bull_Connor

Theophilus Eugene Connor (July 11, 1897 – March 10, 1973), known as Bull Connor, was an American politician who served as an elected Commissioner of Public Safety for the city of Birmingham, Alabama, for more than two decades. He strongly opposed activities of the American Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s. Under the city commission government, Connor had responsibility for administrative oversight of the Birmingham Fire Department and the Birmingham Police Department, which also had their own chiefs.

Connor enforced legal racial segregation and denied civil rights to black citizens, especially during the Southern Christian Leadership Conference's Birmingham campaign of 1963. He became an international symbol of institutional racism. Bull Connor directed the use of fire hoses and police attack dogs against civil rights activists; child protestors were also subject to these attacks.[2][3] National media broadcast these tactics on television, horrifying much of the country. The outrages served as catalysts for major social and legal change in the Southern United States and contributed to passage by the United States Congress of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.[4]

His hopes to exploit this situation to rise in the polls are equally unlikely. I suspect a similar backlash/backfire. South Carolina AA voters are already indicating that probability.

Eastland never voted for any civil rights legislation. He was a hard core racist white supremacist his entire political career.

Most notably Biden worked with Eastland on legislation to ban the use of busing for desegregation.

We all know what MLK and Booker mean by love and it's not the same as praise or whitewashing someone's character. Booker wants people to respect the president (on a human level) but Booker is also calling for impeachment proceedings.

Nice try. I admire the effort.

remember, the attack is 2 pronged: 1) Biden dared to mention a segregationist. 2) Biden said Eastland didn't call him boy.

So part 1 was knocked down by your find. Part 2, I guess we'll know more soon.

I can't believe we're still talking about this. I feel like democrats are snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. trumpco has to be laughing their asses off right now.

17. Biden was speaking in the context of his time in the Senate. He said that Eastland called him "son"
Sun Jun 23, 2019, 11:56 PM
Jun 2019

as he refused to acknowledge him as Senator Biden. Apparently Eastland referred to at least one other Senator in a derogatory manner, as well - it was Ted Kennedy who he referred to as "boy".

Biden was talking about the language that was used in the Senate by Eastland. This was his personal experience that he relayed.

See below excerpt from Senator Kennedy's book:

Snip...

Kennedy had just been assigned to the Judiciary Committee, which was chaired by fellow Democrat and the senior senator from Mississippi. Eastland called the 30-year-old Kennedy to his office to discuss subcommittee assignments.

Kennedy told the story to his interviewer, calling himself “an amusement to Eastland.”

Eastland said, “I want you to come over, boy. We’ll talk about your subcommittees.” I said, “That’s fine. When do you want me to come?” “You come by tomorrow morning at ten, and we’ll talk about your subcommittees.” I said, “Okay, I’ll come over.” We had been working all day and night, what committees I want and what committees I don’t want and why. I had all my staff around, and I finally had my little list. “You sit down here, boy.” It’s 10:00. “What do you drink, bourbon or scotch?” I said, “Well, I—” “Bourbon or scotch!?” “Scotch,” I said finally.

I didn't know the backstory regarding Eastland, but I never jumped to the worst interpretation of Biden's remarks, like Booker and others did. And why would I? As Booker and many others have conceded, Biden has a good heart. He's not a bigot. So why the hell did we need to spend days taking about this?!? I'm so disgusted!

23. When he has told that story in the past...
Mon Jun 24, 2019, 02:59 PM
Jun 2019

he didn't say he wasn't called boy, which makes no sense in that sentence, he was more artful in his declaration. The correct form of that statement is "Eastland never called me 'senator," Biden told the Jones supporters. "He called me 'son.'" That's what he said while speaking at a campaign stop for Senator Doug Jones in 2017. When the boy-son construct is used son seems like it could be an endearment whereas using the senator-son construct it is obvious that Eastland is being dismissive of Biden and not according him the respect he earned being a sitting senator. It's just my opinion, but I think Biden would have done well to have made that clear as soon as this started to be a story.

.... would stop lying about Joe Biden praising and extolling Eastland. He never did, and everyone knows it, but people keep accusing him of it. I'm still waiting for someone to stand up and tell Jim Clyburn and John Lewis they are wrong, and why they are wrong. You can't put this perceived burden of guilt on Biden and his supporters and not put that same perceived burden of guilt on Jim Clyburn and John Lewis. One cannot simply have it both ways.
