Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumHa, Bernie!
I'm not a Bernie Sanders fan. But I believe in giving credit where credit is due. And Bernie deserves credit for this exchange with Margaret Brennan on Face the Nation.
MARGARET BRENNAN: I want to ask you about Iran. Was President Trump's decision this week to call off that strike the right one?
SEN. SANDERS: See, it's like somebody setting a fire to a basket full of paper and then putting it out. He helped create the crisis and then he stopped the attacks. The idea that we're looking at the president of the United States who number one, thinks that a war., with Iran is something that might be good for this country.
MARGARET BRENNAN: He was just doing a limited strike of just a limited strike.
SEN. SANDERS: Oh, just a limited strike- well, I'm sorry. I just didn't know that it's okay to simply attack another country with bombs just a limited strike- that's an act of warfare. So two points. That will set off a conflagration all over the Middle East. If you think the war is either- the war in Iraq, Margaret was a disaster I believe from the bottom of my heart that the war- a war with Iran would be even worse, more loss of life never ending war in that region, massive instability.

Thank you, Bernie! That's the point: we can't simply drop bombs on Iran in retaliation for an alleged drone downing and it not be an act of war!

(704 posts)He just happened to be on a show.
Everyone except John "General Lee" Bolton was against the strikes for the very same reason. Tucker Carlson explained it to Trump in a language he could understand.

(58,328 posts)of bombing the U.S. we would consider it an act of war.
It's amazing to me in how too many members of the corporate media conglomerates diminish waging outright violence against sovereign nations and the resulting loss of life should be considered anything less than an act of war.
Diplomacy is hard work so let's "give bombs and death a chance," after all it's just "limited" or "surgical" kind of like having an operation.
Thanks for the thread ChiTownDenny.

(14,168 posts)The one thing I appreciate most about Sanders is he is unencumbered by political talk niceties. He gets right to the point. He's very smart. What he lacks are all the marketable trappings of a politician. I think he'd be a marketing PR person's nightmare to work with. Like trying to market Grumpy Cat (rip) for the new Purina spokescat. But that's also what I love about him.

(23,081 posts)The worst part is the stikes weren't withheld due to any concern about life. They were withheld because the President of our biggest foreign adversary doesn't want us to hurt Iran. Bet he wants is to wait until Iran is better prepared and tell him way in advance so he can have them ready to destroy us.

(1,846 posts)We should have prosecuted the war criminals that invaded Iraq because ... well they made us afraid. We were afraid that they had WMDs. Outside of Florida, since when is being afraid a legal excuse to attack?
It was an obvious violation of international laws and the fact that we never prosecuted the guilty means that we'll just keep doing it.
I'm still pissed that Ford pardoned Nixon. What a giant green light to future illegal presidential behavior that turned out to be.

(12,860 posts)Margaret Brennan asked a loaded question which must not be answered with a yes or no.
Bernie recognized that immediately.
Answering "no" translates to saying the military strike should have gone forward.
Answering "yes" gives Trump credit for preventing a conflict his own administration has been ginning up.
Any Democrat who answered yes or no would have failed an important test.
