https://www.newsweek.com/bernie-sanders-joe-biden-hyde-amendment-abortion-rights-1442412Sanders told Vermont's Bennington Banner newspaper in September 1972 -- months before the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling on Roe v. Wade -- that abortion procedures should only be a concern between a woman and her physician. The article sits aside several letters the then-Liberty Union candidate for governor wrote to local newspapers calling for the abolition of "all laws dealing with abortion, drugs, sexual behavior."
The Bennington Banner confirmed to Newsweek Wednesday that Sanders was interviewed for the published 1972 article in which he feared women "will be forced to go to those states where abortions are legal."

(2,208 posts)Twice.
"Hes always been a staunch supporter of the Hyde Amendment. As a U.S. senator from Delaware, Biden voted against a 1977 compromise that allowed Medicaid to fund abortions that included exceptions for victims of rape and incest in addition to concerns for the life of the mother, reports NBC News. While the rape and incest exceptions passed in that case, Biden voted in 1981 to again remove them, in what was the most far-reaching ban on federal funds ever enacted by Congress.

So in 1977 Biden voted AGAINST including RAPE and INCEST exceptions in the Hyde Amendment. He lost that vote.
Then in 1981 Joe Biden voted to REMOVE those RAPE and INCEST exceptions that were already in the law!
Sorry, but even back in 1981 THAT was an extreme position to take against women's rights.

(11,991 posts)If you legitimately believe that what's in the womb is a protectable human life, what difference does rape or incest make? I mean, nobody says it's okay to kill a born child if it was the product of rape or incest, everyone agrees that that is a protectable human life. What's the rationale for the distinction pre-birth?

(67,782 posts)So, apparently he was in favor of the abolition of laws against heroine, cocaine, meth, LSD, etc. use? And he was also in favor of the abolition of laws dealing with (unspecified) sexual behavior? That can include all sorts of behavior that I won't even get into here.
Has he evolved on these issues since 1972?

(18,319 posts)Sanders ran twice for governor and twice for Senate under the party's banner before ultimately leaving the party.
Still, Sanders was involved enough that he served as the chairperson of the party for several years in the 1970s. In 1972, Sanders backed Benjamin Spock as a presidential candidate over the Democratic candidate, George McGovern.
snip==============================
I was asked to put my name on the ballot and I did, thats true, Sanders said, in the 1988 appearance. But he insisted he was never a member of the Trotskyist party."
Sanders ran and won a narrow race for mayor of Burlington, Vermont in 1981. Though he ran as an independent, he identified himself as a socialist mayor. He continued to be an independent until he put himself on the ballot as a Democrat in the current presidential race.

Other top recipients in 2016 included House Speaker Paul Ryan and swing-state senators such as Ron Johnson of Wisconsin and Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania. Both senators won closely fought election battles last november to help Republicans retain control of the Senate.
The only non-Republican in the top 25: Bernie Sanders, a Senate independent whose state, Vermont, has a strong hunting tradition. He accepted $11,129 in cash.
