As Biden took the stage in the city of brotherly love to officially kick off his candidacy, a raucous crowd of 6,000 supporters greeted him and showed that the momentum behind his campaign is anything but sleepy.

(68,469 posts)It is part of the blue wall Midwestern states we must win to take Trump down.

(11,238 posts)Yes, it's a divided state politically, and the western half of the state, I have heard it said, is more like Ohio, but a rally in Philadelphia isn't indicative of a candidate's appeal to midwesterners. Every Democratic candidate gets a huge reception here: I've personally been to big, wildly enthusiastic rallies for Al Gore, John Kerry and Hillary Clinton. By the way, the western half of the state resents the hell out of Philadelphia, because they say we suck up too much of the state's resources. Biden's campaign may well prove to have momentum in the midwest, but appearing in very liberal Philadelphia will have had nothing to do with it.

for Alanama n between the cities. We lost PA in 16...Biden was born there and is beloved. He have 6000 at his rally. And Trump is unlikely to win if we take PA. I lived in PA for years.

(7,716 posts)I lived in Center City for 6 years, settled just over the border in the NW suburbs of Montgomery County for going on 30 years. Married into a wonderful NE Philadelphia Catholic family. Mostly blue collar, union, husband's sister a city teacher and her spouse a Philly cop, (there's even a mummer in extended family). All but one brother are Democrats. Husband's Dem bro and his wife did not vote for Hillary but I know they love Joe. He is beloved around here, he speaks our language, he doesn't have to try to connect to blue collar folks because he IS us.

(4,602 posts)Philly aint the gateway to nowhere.
Certainly not the Midwest. Were a coastal mid-Atlantic city.
Lived in Philly almost 50 years. The idea that we are a midwestern city is bonkers.

(7,716 posts)Indies and even some ever Trump Republicans in Pennsylvania. He can when back the voters that made that razor-thin margin for Trump and then some, the types of people that Hillary did not do well with. Joe has that appeal and then some. Blue collar folks all through Pennsylvania, Philly and Pittsburgh suburbs and Luzerne County actually does translate into other Rust Belt states and into the Midwest. Biden polls very well in the Midwestern states, however, he doesn't have to win any Midwestern states aside from the Rust Belt-blue wall states to kick Trumbo's gelatinous ass to the curb.
