On twitter there seems to be those ripping Joe's call for national unity.

If you polled Americans and asked him if they would vote for a president who calls for unity as opposed to voting for a president who calls for more division I suspect the former would win by a huge margin.

primary today, I would vote for:

Now, I must leave for a few hours. The man I work closely with on a regular basis is giving a TEDx talk an hour's drive from here. So, I'm going to head out to get there in time for the little networking event that precedes the talks. After my colleague gives his 18 minute TED talk, I'll come home, where my wife will have already arrived back from a four day trip to Florida.

I dislike such TED talks, even though much of what he will say was typed first by me. I hope his nervousness doesn't trip him up. He has rehearsed it on video several times for my comments, and he seems to be ready.

Whether one is a Biden supporter or not, this sort of message is one we should be embracing. The issue I see is that some people consider anyone who is a conservative, or even simply less left than themselves, is a far-right nazi. They are not. They may be wrong about a lot things with various degrees depending on where they fall on the spectrum, but they aren't all nazis. Much like not everyone who is left of center is a far-left communist who wants revolution. Calling for national unity isn't the same thing as saying you need to be friends with nazis. Unless you truly believe half the population (sometimes over half depending on how extreme you take this view) are nazis. If that's the prevailing view, then I guess there is no hope because those of us stuck in between these two extremes are going to be round up and shot for either being communist revolutionaries or fascist nazis. Maybe even shot twice for simultaneously being a fascist nazi and a communist revolutionary in certain situations.

At this point many politicians, mainly those on the GOP side, are not opposing policies other than their own because they disagree with them as much as they simply want to win at all costs, just for the sake of winning. It's tribalism, not politics. I believe that Biden and others who are calling for unity aren't advocating compromising on issues, but are trying to break down the tribalism and opposition for its own sake that makes useful legislation impossible. It's important to make the distinction between the sort of compromise that involves giving in, and rational negotiation by all parties leading to positive goals. The latter result is impossible as long as our politics remains tribal. I think that's what Biden was talking about - eliminating destructive political tribalism.
