'Beyond shameful,' doctors say of Guam Memorial Hospital's aging labor and delivery unit

Angelina Mapa-Heiland, 38, remembers being wheeled in and out of different rooms right before and after giving birth to her child at the Guam Memorial Hospital on Nov. 22.

"The high-end care I got from the doctors and staff did not match the condition of the facility," she said. "The facility needs updating."

For many women giving birth at GMH, they have to be moved to up to five different beds — to get examined, for their labor, for their delivery, for their recovery, and then to the obstetrics unit.

GMH's years-long plan of renovating its Labor and Delivery Unit would have given mothers more birthing rooms so they don't need to be moved from one area to another to get the complete care they need.
