We Went To Puerto Rico: The Most Unequal Place in America - More Perfect Union

43% of people in Puerto Rico live in poverty.

More than 5,000 crypto traders, real estate developers and other wealthy Americans have moved to the island since 2012.

These rich transplants pay 3% taxes, while locals pay up to 36%.

We spoke with local residents, investigative journalists and activists as well as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to answer one question:

What happens when a government surrenders itself entirely to the 1%?

We were on a cruise that docked in San Juan in February of 2020, right before everything went to hell. Because it was a nerd cruise, a bunch of us arranged a trip to the Areceibo radio telescope. As we were driving out from San Juan to Areceibo, I was shocked at the poverty that these Americans were living in. Part of it was the damage from the latest hurricane, but this was just appalling. Meanwhile, in the city, there were million-dollar condo buildings.
