Bernie Sanders

Of all the arguments the Democratic establishment has thrown out against Bernie Sanders candidacy, perhaps the most recurring one revolves around electability. Sure, you agree with him, they argue, but he cant win.
A just released CNN poll finds Sanders out-polling all of the GOPs major candidates, though pretty much tied with Jeb Bush. Heres how Sanders stacks up:
SANDERS: 48%
BUSH: 47%
SANDERS: 48%
WALKER: 42%
SANDERS: 59%
TRUMP: 38%
If you limit the poll sample to just registered voters, Bush defeats Sanders by a single point. Either way, this credible poll suggests that Sanders is not just some pie-in-the-sky general election candidate. His more uphill battle may be the primary. But even there, he has some strengths. Polling out last week shows hes the only candidate from either side who has a net favorability rating.

So far, they haven't been too successful, but they have a lot to lose so they won't quit.

(45,251 posts)when a Democrat does other things.
Take ending welfare as we know it. Because of the cloture rule Republican POTUS could not have done that without co-operation from quite a few Democratic Senators. But, if the leader of their party is also POTUS and telling them he needs this done and the party needs it done, getting Republicans to cooperate is not likely to be much of a problem. So, it's easier/better if a Democrat cuts "entitlements."
It's also better/easier to have a unitary Executive because one person is much easier to influence than 535. You get to the POTUS and he or she gets to his or her party members in Congress.
Flip it and it's much easier/better if a Republican President proposes Part D of Medicare and brings his or her party on board. Then, even if it also helps drug companies, Democrats will vote for it because it helps the elderly and disabled pay for expensive meds. Drug companies who charge a fortune get subsidized and get more customers without lowering prices.. The elderly and disabled get meds. Win win win for everyone but the taxpayer.
As long as you ensure that the financial policies of Democrats and Republicans are not very different, you've got it made.
And that's where the think tanks and the expensive speeches come in. And that's why the Koch's would contribute to the DLC, as well as to the Tea Party.
It doesn't have to be any single group in control of either party or both. It's not rocket science. Anyone can play. Drug companies, cab companies, investment banksters, you name it, they can figure it out same way we can.

(45,251 posts)useful. No matter which is the Democratic nominee, the Democratic nominee will win blue states and lose red states. Notable exceptions to the prior sentence--and everything has exceptions--was that Alaska was going blue in 2008 before McCain picked Palin and Indiana, of all places, did go blue.

(44,583 posts)The Walker and Trump results say "I'd rather vote for a socialist than a clown." So why does the Bush poll say "I'd rather vote for a Bush than a socialist?"
