Todd Challenges Sanders over ‘Confrontation’ with Black Lives Matter Protesters

On Meet the Press Sunday morning, host Chuck Todd asked Sanders about the “confrontation,” a characterization with which the Vermont senator immediately took issue.

“The issue they raised was in fact a very important issue,” Sanders said. “This an issue of concern that I strongly share…I was not dismissive. I’ve been involved in the Civil Rights movement all of my life. I believe we have to deal with the issue of institutional racism.”

Todd brought up the point many African-American activists have made against Sanders, that he deflects the matter of institutional racism onto economic inequality, a subject he and his largely white progressive base are more comfortable with.

Sanders called institutional racism and economic inequality “parallel problems.”

without economic justice, and vice versa. they are parallel problems. and that is not the least bit dismissive and it should not controversial...at all.

He is going to have to fight the media and much of the Democratic Party Establishment every step of the way. And so far I think he is doing a great job. Others can hide and send out carefully crafted twitter responses, Bernie gets up there and takes the heat (and dishes it out)!

It was hilarious watching CT get owned. Hate to say it but it may scare off the MSM what with their superior authority and knowledge.

But it was still fun to watch.

Any establishmentarian who does any opposition research on Bernie knows that he's not a racist and that it would be pretty hard to make him look like one.

We'll have to give the Toad an A for effort, but an F in time management.

... but their message is aimed at dolts who WON'T do any homework. Seen more than a few right here in the Land of Milk and Honey!

Bernie's one of my senators, and I've watched him since he first ran for mayor of Burlington back in the day. There's NO one in this campaign with more street cred working for civil rights than Bernie.

I know there are folks of African heritage here in DU-land that like O'Malley quite a bit, but I haven't read enough on him yet to form an opinion.

But I get up on my pins when anyone starts casting aspersions on Bernie's civil rights record. He don't owe nobody nuthin' on THAT score!

Now is the time for a real progressive populist movement, but the message needs to be clear and not overly complex and it needs to be repeated over and over to drive it home into the minds of the people.

Then Bernie will win

while ignoring the right's most important weapon- rw radio

republican radio has been dominating messaging in the us for 20 years while the left ignored it. the left still does and that continues to be the biggest political mistake in history. that is why the sanders and warrens and wellstones can't win in the us. there's no way he'll get past some 'howard dean moment' or other swiftboating campaign if he happens to beat hillary and that kind of crap will dominate msm coverage. all they have to do to beat dems is get their base of the usual 20 or 30 mil teabagger/dittoheads and the same amt of apathetic voters that base influences, and do their usual suppression and election theft and that's it.

the only way bernie can win is if we get a democracy back and that can't happen as long as dems and the left ignores republicon radio, which continues to kick internet ass. dems have to do something different, they have to attack, and stop playing catchup because 1000 coordinated UNCHALLENGED radio stations get to blast 50 mil people a week with psyops.

Some would have the 2016 election be only about discussing race. Might be a good idea in fact, but that is not going to happen.

Bernie will talk about race problems more than any other candidate. Just wait and see.

Saying 'I was not dismissive' sounds like something a Republican would say. I would have gone with 'I was not trying to be dismissive', which suggests at least that you realize there was a messaging issue in the instant.
