(692 posts)using Teddy Roosevelt to promote Bernie Sanders. Teddy was a racist bigot and an Imperialist warmonger along with being an all around jerk by most indications. History matters and the history is not all that hard to dig up for anyone paying attention. Teddy Roosevelt is not something for the left to subscribe to.

(692 posts)telling you the facts on the ground and objective reality. Facts matter and the history matters. Sanders campaign needs to be about issues and not promoting "superheroes and saviors" and feel good symbolism...especially bad symbolism. Teddy Roosevelt was a warmongering Imperialist and a racist bigot. Whether you play or not is irrelevant. People need to know the history of what they're promoting. What is real for the left and what isn't.
Theodore Roosevelt and American Racism
By BAR Editor and Senior Columnist Margaret Kimberley
I don't go so far as to think that the only good Indian is the dead Indian, but I believe nine out of every ten are, and I shouldn't like to inquire too closely into the case of the tenth. The most vicious cowboy has more moral principle than the average Indian.
-- Theodore Roosevelt

" It is true today and was true in the past. The most celebrated political figures in this country, including those called blue blooded, elite or patrician, were mostly criminals. The descendants of the Mayflower ought to be ashamed of their heritage instead of bragging about their ancestors who began the genocide of indigenous people. The earliest American presidents Washington, Jefferson and Madison, earned their wealth through slave holding. Their successors in the office of the presidency either acquiesced to the slave holding interests or actively protected them until a bloody civil war put an end to their dirty work. "

"In the Philippines from 1901 1911, the United States killed more than 250,000 people in order to end their struggle for independence. First as Assistant Secretary of the Navy in 1898 and then as vice president and president, Roosevelt made clear that he lusted for death on a mass scale. I should welcome almost any war, for I think this country needs one, Roosevelt opined. He said that war stimulated spiritual renewal and the clear instinct for racial selfishness. He defended the imperial project in the Philippines by declaring Filipinos Chinese half-breeds and surmised that the bloodshed was the most glorious war in our nations history.

"It isnt shocking that a man born in the 19th century to wealth and privilege who was raised by a slave holder would turn out to be so loathsome. It should be shocking that in the 21st century there is still such an inclination to sweep this easily accessible information under the rug. "

"It is high time for Americans to grow up and that means eschewing tales of teddy bears in favor of telling the unvarnished and ugly truth. Those who feel the need for hero worship shouldnt look towards Mount Rushmore or the dead presidents on currency. These people are invariably disreputable and should be remembered only as cautionary tales of how human beings should not behave. Theodore Roosevelt is definitely in that category."

(41,187 posts)used it as a pretext to enter this group, and to continue writing after saying you didn't care what I thought, about a president who has many progressive achievements as well as faults. This is not the topic of this group and I think you should delete your posts.

(692 posts)I didn't enter the Bernie Sanders group to bash Sanders. I made an observation of things that are not helpful to Sanders or the the issues that must be discussed. That is my opinion. That's what discussion involves give and take. You disagree that is your prerogative. Using Teddy Roosevelt to promote Bernie Sanders is not a good thing and many leftists would agree. At this point in history... real people on the ground are suffering worse than they've ever been. Politics is not a game. Everything must be up for criticism whether it's something you post or I post or anyone posts. Teddy Roosevelt is not someone that the left should be holding up as a standard bearer of leftist causes.

(692 posts)I am not your enemy and I support many of the issues that the Sanders campaign brings to light. Do you seriously think that Bernie Sanders would support the statements and Imperial warmongering ideas of Teddy Roosevelt ? That is the point.

(45,120 posts)this group is a safe haven for supporters of Bernie Sanders to discuss his life, his career, and current campaign for the Democratic Party's Nomination. You want to talk about someone else do it in GD. Not here. THAT is the point.

(692 posts)and to be honest I didn't realize that the post was in the protected group when I posted. That being said... you guys should be able to discuss stuff like this but it's your group so that is that. I certainly understand the enthusiasm surrounding the Sanders campaign and again not your enemy. There are other forums to discuss things of this nature so it's all good. Cheers and keep up the battle. It can be won.
