The Urban dictionary has 2 definitions with the 1st being what I always thought.

Moonbat (1) (n) Irrational and Mentally unstable persons of a decidedly liberal political affiliation;
(2) (n) Someone on the extreme edge of whatever their -ism happens to be.

A long time ago a RWRNJ accused several posters on a different site of being moonbats. I came up with a parody of Moon River that was pretty funny. I wish I had saved it. They say the internet is forever, but don't you believe it. Anyway all the other posters claimed the title moonbat with glee in the tradition of Yankee Doodle. Mr. Grumpypuss was so not amused that we were having fun with what he thought was a consummate insult.

BTW - I think moonbat is a play on George Monbiot the British MP that use to keep the rest of us in stitches while really pissing off the Tories.
