Bernie Sanders Single-Payer Lincoln-Douglas Style Debate Moderated by John Boehner (1993)

Published on Jan 24, 2017
November 3, 1993. Congressmen debated the benefits of a single-payer health care system under a special order in the House. Reps. Sanders and McDermott supported the idea of a Canadian-style single-payer system. Reps. Hastert and Thomas opposed such a system and called it socialistic. The debate was cosponsored by the Conservative Opportunity Society and the Progressive Caucus. This was the first in a series of Lincoln-Douglas style debates scheduled to take place during the coming months, and designed to give national issues the debate and discussion members say they “do not often receive” during House sessions.

My summation of the debate:

1. The Republicans lied repeatedly.

2. The Republicans used fear tactics.

3. The Republicans protect capitalism and 'free markets' at the expense of citizens.

4. The Republicans bandy about the word Socialism.

5. The Republicans had their facts wrong.

6. Sanders and McDermott had to keep correcting the falsehoods of the Republicans.

7. Sanders and McDermott told the facts.

8. Sanders and McDermott called out the insurance companies and pharmaceutical companies.

9. Sanders and McDermott put the needs of the citizens over the wants of capitalism and 'free markets'.

Sanders and McDermott won the debate.

The Republicans are EVIL DESPICABLE LIARS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Republicans believe that the only thing people need is capitalism- that capitalism will magically solve all the problems people might have. They continue to believe this even when all evidence shows otherwise. It is based on "faith" not facts.

They don't give a damn about the people of this country.

They represent the needs and the wants of the powerful and wealthy.

They know the facts.

They know trickle down economics (Supply Side Economics) doesn't benefit the masses.

They don't care !!!!

The are EVIL LIARS !!!!!!!!!!!!

They also believe that people who fail to thrive in a capitalist society deserve to die.

That was my point.

They are EVIL LIARS !!!!!!!!!!!

This country and the world would be a better, kinder, gentler place without them.

I don't want to harm them, I just wish they would magically disappear.

They destroy everything they touch.

If your suffering increases their profits, your suffering solves the problem. "Kinder" and "gentler" are not among their goals.

It's a seriously warped world view, but it's the one where they can see themselves as "winners" instead of "evil" (which is what they look like to the rest of us). I agree the worst thing that can happen is they get what they want.
