Sanders 2016!
Happy Independence Day America! Help is on the way!

(10,558 posts)I don't know if anyone here has noted this yet, but DU is NOT reacting to Senator Sanders the same way it did to Senator Obama at this same point in his first bid for the Presidency. I doubt if even 50% of us were backing him yet back then. Of course there are the mitigating factors to be considered but this incredible outpouring of genuine love that we currently see for Bernie was definitely not one of those mitigating factors!

(26,661 posts)I'm a liberal. I wanted single payer health insurance and an end to the military running the government, so I supported Dennis Kucinich. After 8 fucking years of the Bush debacle, I was pretty sure we could elect any Democrat, even a liberal, so let's go for it!
Of course, I supported, campaigned and voted for Obama, and was full of sheer pride and joy when he won big. I'm satisfied with him most of the time, and not really so disappointed. I never thought he was my liberal candidate from the beginning.
I'll disagree with him, but won't bash him, and I won't bash any of my fellow Democrats.
I think, maybe, Obama was the right man for the time, and now, Bernie is that person. I would love to see a woman president in my lifetime, but Senator Warren isn't running and Bernie is.

(10,558 posts)I watched on live on TV when then Illinois Senator Obama gave the Keynote Speech at the 2004 Democratic Convention. I was for Kerry of course but before that speech was done I wished with all my heart that it was Obama running instead of Kerry!
It has been over a decade now, President Obama has many accomplishments that I am happy with but there are a couple of items I am bitter about too. Not going after the Bush Family Evil Empire is the one I feel most pained over. Yes, I've heard all the counter arguments for his and then later Speaker Pelosi's CHOICE to not do so here at DU but in my mind, and in the eyes of the victims worldwide, not having that public trial was wrong.
When President Obama ran for his second term, I was a Kucinich man first and like everyone else at DU I supported President Obama when he got the nomination but by then...well I was and still am just OK with him. He has always been lightyears better than anything the Republicans have to offer.
Yes, I do understand that's how politics work. I understand that in order to get stuff you have to give other stuff up. That's 'just politics'. I have never believed that the world need put up with any nations' 'just politics'. If WWII in Europe taught us anything it should have taught us that.
I have been listening to Brunch With Bernie on The Thom Hartmann program fairly faithfully since Thom and Bernie started out. Over the years I've come to love and respect Bernie Sanders as much as I've ever loved and respected Dennis Kucinich.
I know exactly how Sanders feels about us Veterans, his thoughts on Unions-on how the Republicans are out to destroy Unions, on what best to do with Social Security-on how the Republicans are out to privatize our Social Security, why we need as a nation to raise the minimum wage and sooo much more.
I enthusiastically agree with what I have been hearing from this man Bernie Sanders but...well we knew in our hearts that such lofty ideals he talked about, many of which he had the courage to actually fight for in Congress could ever be accomplished. Why not? Well that's 'just politics' around here.
All these years I never dared to dream that Bernie Sanders would throw his hat in the ring but now, just like when then Senator Barack Obama first offered us Hope and Change, I have HOPE once again.

(5,275 posts)No need for nuance, vagaries, and dodging like Hillary - notice her tap dancing around the edges concerning the TPP. She can't speak out vigorously against her sugar daddies. Bernie can say Hell No to the TPP and really go after the Banksters, Hillary cannot.
We must end this Third Way takeover of the Democratic Party ASAP.

(5,400 posts)Yeah, the corporate wing of American politics is sweating his campaign, and reacting poorly. That they have to react, and have no plan or innate ability to counter a Progressive insurgency, is forcing them into a bad negative feedback loop.
Expect more attacks on Sanders from supposed Democrats for talking up our party's traditional, core, beliefs and policies. Then watch them huddle to talk over why they are hemorrhaging support from Democratic voters.
