(115,926 posts)Dean got excited at a rally; the way he was miked made him sound louder than he was; and the media reported that he sounded kind of unhinged and out of control. It didn't take long before all the MSM was saying Dean had gone off the rails and everybody else believed it. The Nevada Non-Riot report has been made even worse, not only by the media but the legions of trolls and bots, paid and unpaid. "A lie goes around the world before the truth can get its boots on."
A good LTE in my local newspaper today said pretty much the same thing:
Does any of this absolve Bernie Sanders from adhering to the highest level of moral conduct? Absolutely not. Nobody condones violence and most assuredly not Sanders. But the same standard of the highest level of moral conduct has to be applied across the board.
Where has been the outcry for the voters disenfranchised in Arizona, in New York, in Nevada and elsewhere? Where has been the outcry for an insular, intransigent political party doing everything in its power to demonize and marginalize one of the candidates running under its flag? Where has been the outcry of mainstream media parroting the institutional views of the established political parties?
The Star Tribune at one time was considered to be an essential organ of the Fourth Estate, but when it perpetuates a false narrative of reality (namely, that it is the symptom, not the cause, that is the problem), it becomes a sock puppet of the corporate voice. This failure is at the same level of betrayal of moral responsibility as when mainstream media was complicit in the narrative that sent this country into Iraq. The king has no clothes.

And we are manipulated into wars using the exact same process
It's worth looking at how this happens, how false or misleading premises are established as fact by endless repetition and selectively-edited quotes and clips.
I don't know if the majority of people will ever be capable of sorting through these kind of distortions to get any actual understanding of events. I doubt it.
So the only solution possible is to remove agendas from media. One way to do so is through democratization of media, such as what the internet allows. There are still distortions, but all sides are able to make their case, rather than only those who ally with corporate interests.
Another way is to prohibit for-profit corporations from doing news or political opinion on the airwaves or cable. A total non-profit news delivery model, with no corporate money allowed in the process. Kind of like what we need to do with our political campaigns.
We're not even close to having any actionable solution for this, nor even an agreed-on strategy. But until we do, the country will be running on consent given by people who are basing that consent on manufactured consensus and lies. And that''s no way to run a "democracy".
