Bernie Sanders campaign parted ways with its California state director Michael Ceraso on Wednesday morning, 27 days before the primary in the state that Sanders has repeatedly said is crucial to his effort to capture the Democratic nomination.
The surprise move came after a period when Ceraso advocated for a California strategy that involved more investment on field and digital organizing than on television advertising a staple of Sanders campaign elsewhere so far he told POLITICO.
Sanders campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Ceraso, who was Sanders deputy state director in New Hampshire and helped lead the teams in a series of March-voting states, had been working for the Vermont senator in California for weeks. As the campaign turned more of its attention to California and its 475 delegates late last month, it also brought in Robert Becker Sanders Iowa state director and another veteran of a series of other contests since then, including New York to work in the state.
California, the state with the most Democratic primary delegates on the map, has long loomed as an important ending point for Sanders, whose campaign believes it can win over a significant portion of the state's liberal and working-class population.
A win or a close performance there, senior aides believe, would go a long way to helping him stockpile as many delegates as possible before the Democratic convention in July.
Sanders himself has started spending more time there in recent days, but he has yet to spend any money on television ads there after months of outspending Hillary Clinton in primary battlegrounds. Campaigns traditionally rely heavily on television in California, which has 11 media markets. But Sanders himself suggested to the Sacramento Bee on Monday that he may not spend on TV ads.
WTF?!! I wonder what happened. Hopefully they will have a new person to run his campaign in California ASAP.

(10,336 posts)of some kind. For now, I'm going to take the optimistic approach and say, from everything I can see so far, Bernie's campaign has been near flawless, save for a few things we all might think could have gone better. One thing I can say that we ALL, every one of us, can do for the campaign is to volunteer even a small amount of time to do some canvassing. By taking a short, easy 20-min online tutorial we all are able to make phone calls into California! I took mine yesterday, and am ready to do just that! I hope everyone will consider doing this...You can start right here! : https://go.berniesanders.com/page/content/phonebank

(39,451 posts)Michael Ceraso, who was the campaign's deputy director in New Hampshire, has been replaced with the campaigns former Iowa state director, Robert Becker. Becker was sent to Michigan and New York and other key states in the last few months. He is already working in Los Angeles, campaign sources told ABC News today.
"Robert Becker is now the state director for Bernie in California, campaign spokesman Michael Briggs said in a statement. Becker is one of the most seasoned and savvy people working on our campaign or any campaign.
Sanders himself has said that winning the Golden State, which holds its primary on June 7, is "imperative to his long-shot effort to overtake rival Hillary Clinton in the race for delegates. But the change-up speaks to larger uneasiness within Sanders ranks ahead of the primary with the largest number of delegates at stake.
Politico first reported the shake-up.
phew!!!!!!

(23,664 posts)I have a little different take on the by mail voters. Generally speaking, those who vote by mail have planned ahead and requested a mail in ballot. That means they are for the most part, the type of person who thinks about what they intend to do and about the consequences of their actions. They are more likely than walk in voters to pay more attention to the issues and not vote based on personalities or name recognition.
A thinking voter who analyzes the issues and votes for candidates on the basis of his/her analysis. That describes those who vote by mail. It also describes those who vote for Bernie Sanders.
Ergo, Bernie doesn't need to drop a load of dough trying to attract mail in voters. He's got most of them anyway. I'd be willing to bet he pulls 60-70% among early voters. Better to save his money for those who decide to vote the morning of the primary.
