(10,622 posts)I not only support Bernie Sanders and his consistent values. Values that were and still are my values (and that of nearly the entire party I might add when first I joined the party so many years ago).
Strange how neither of us has changed yet we, who are simply center to slightly center left Democrats are now described as "far left" without ever changing or adopting a far left ideology or agenda. There isn't even a far left in this country anymore as there once was in the 20's and 30's (they were not evil by the way, the American far left were the first to support unionization and the first to join the fight alongside the earliest unions back when doing so got many killed).
The truth is, Neither I nor Sanders have never been far left, I never did hate them however as did the John Birchers. It is in many ways unfortunate we lost any far left in this country to help counter the ever growing and extremely dangerous far right Fascist movement. The far left helped influence FDR and that influence helped all of us.
I understand the "overton window thinking"
But if one pays attention to public polling of issues, our views fall well within that window, also it is important to note that Right/Left/Center have actual definitions that have nothing to do with the Overton window theory, and calling a political Centrist like myself and Sanders "far left" is either showing an ignorance of the political meaning of the terms, or are outright lies meant to discredit or distort perfectly acceptable popular views.
Now there are some far left parties and individuals in other countries like say the UK, but they are not the majority, yet have some influence just as Eugene V. Debs did during his time (and he wasn't even far left simply mid to far left). Especially his help regarding the forming of unions and a bit of influence on FDR.
The UK and it's parties regarding right left etc. 2015
US 2016 election (note the lack of a "far left" influence of any kind)
What is disturbing this election cycle is not an imaginary far left, but rather a very real threat of far right fascism, note the upper right corner and be very concerned, I do not believe Middle right (Hillary) is the answer, but as always a center left Democratic position such as Sanders and mine is, unless of course one is extremely wealthy or is enthralled with corporations.

(10,622 posts)two party rather than Parliamentary system of governance.
They should include not only the green party but also the other parties such as the libertarian and conservative parties for added perspective, but they never have, likely as I said because lacking a parliamentary system, our two party system is fully baked into the constitutional cake as it were.

(3,146 posts)To the end. And no, I'm not voting for a conservative candidate in November even if it means I'm banned from DU. I've been here since 2004 and am going to stay true to the liberal/progressive values that brought me here to begin with. A (D) next to person's name doesn't necessarily mean she's a democrat.

(39,909 posts)Not near as many as there used to be.
Many have left for places where issues, policy, and direction of the Democratic Party are discussed among adults.
It won't be long before the active membership of DU = the active membership of the Hillary Group.
Will the last Liberal to leave please turn out the lights.
