Hat tip, Jason Miyares. Tweeting stuff like this seems to consume a great deal of his time.

"Wolverines"

Swift shot: Classic Milius! If you read my bio, you know this was one of my favorite films growing up, it put things at the time into a perspective I appreciated. Today I have heard it described as silly and frivolous story-telling, bullshit, it was a great film and I will tell you why below…

We watched "Red Dawn" in history class.

Our teacher said, "If this ever happens, this is what I want you to do," and pressed "Play."

Love, LOVE Red Dawn. '80s classic.

Red Dawn

Original theatrical poster by John Alvin

Directed by: John Milius
Release date: August 10, 1984

Red Dawn is a 1984 American action film directed by John Milius, with a screenplay by Kevin Reynolds and Milius. It stars Patrick Swayze, Charlie Sheen, C. Thomas Howell, Lea Thompson, Jennifer Grey, Ben Johnson, Harry Dean Stanton, Ron O'Neal, William Smith, and Powers Boothe. It was the first film to be released in the US with a PG-13 rating (under the modified rating system introduced on July 1, 1984).

The film depicts the United States invaded by the Soviet Union and its Cuban and Nicaraguan allies. However, the onset of World War III is in the background and not fully elaborated. The story follows a group of American high school students who resist the occupation with guerrilla warfare, naming themselves "Wolverines", after their high school mascot.

CLIP DESCRIPTION:
The Wolverines employ the art of guerilla warfare, ambushing the enemy and quickly disappearing before reinforcements arrive.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
Set at an indeterminate point in the future, this drama with an overt anti-communist message begins as an ostensible war movie: Russian and Cuban forces have invaded the U.S. and are viciously eliminating the inhabitants of a small town, when a group of teens escapes and plans a counterattack. Jed (Patrick Swayze), Robert (C. Thomas Howell), and six of their friends watch in amazement as soldiers parachute into their town and start shooting. The teens grab a pickup truck, stock up on supplies at the local store, and head for the hills. Meanwhile, the men in the town -- after a minimal resistance -- are rounded up and held at a drive-in theater converted into a concentration camp. The sadistic Soviet military then make them watch acclaimed Russian director Sergei Eisenstein's 1938 classic Alexander Nevsky, as their punishing rehabilitation begins. Meanwhile, after minimal resistance from the adults, a Cuban, Bella (Ron O'Neal), is put in charge and is not certain how he can really defeat the teen army. The Soviets and Cubans have so far defeated the American Army, Navy, Marines, and Air Force, but these teens are really something else. After a successful ambush, the teen guerrillas gear up for future forays, when they are suddenly betrayed by one of their number and by doubts about the morality of what they are doing. Red Dawn is noteworthy for being the first movie released with the PG-13 rating, created by the MPAA after public outcry over violent content in the PG-rated Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Gremlins.

Even as a politically impressionable teenager, I thought this film was absolute crap. I couldn't believe actors I admired like Patrick Swayze and Harry Dean Stanton agreed to be in it. Stanton's "Aveeeeeeenge MEEEEEEEEEE!" line was pure, unadulterated crapolo.

The scene with the tank battle between American M1 Abrams and Soviet T-72's. Back then, Soviet-made T-72's were hard to come by in the West. So they built at least one replica, reportedly so convincing that its presence in L.A. alerted some CIA officers.

I was sitting there - most of my high school football team was there - thinking that this is such a complete piece of crap. Cubans? Air drop into the middle of nowhere…for what? Cubans?

I will say that I never looked at chain link surrounded tennis courts the same. The Boy Scout angle was interesting.

I know they’ve both passed away but Powers Booth performance actually rivaled Richard Crenna’s earth shatteringly bad performance in “First Blood”.

That was back when I thought that the Soviets were ten feet tall.

I still wonder why anyone could think that the Cuban and Nicaraguan forces could get that far north. While the Mexicans might not have had much of a Cold War army, its population is far greater than Cuba’s and Nicaragua’s combined and the terrain is rugged enough to scare the hell out of anyone with a map (See all those funny things dotting the map is dark brown or gray, Clem? Those are called mountains. They’re like hills except that they’re really, really tall.

And those other things, the ones between the mountains? Those, Goober, are called canyons. They’re like gullies, except that they’re really, really deep).
