Most Fridays at 5 pm eastern, in General Discussion, I run the Friday Afternoon Challenge, usually about art and culture. Art majors welcome, but you don't have to be an expert, just love art. No put downs or snotty behavior, just fun and perhaps revisits to a work of art that you always loved.
Hope to see you join in!

(8,571 posts)but I thoroughly enjoy looking at all the beautiful art. Who knows? I may start to learn just looking at all your posts. Thank you for posting them, it is a welcome treasure on DU.

(63,926 posts)I got started due to my insatiable curiosity. I now read constantly about different aspects of art. The varieties are endless and I thought "why not make a little game about it on DU" because I really wanted to share what I'd learned. I soon found out that DUers are one helluva smart bunch about art. The art expertise on this website really knocks me out! And everyone is incredibly nice...I don't think I've ever read a harsh word from one poster to another and that means a lot to me...

(63,926 posts)DUers have great experiences with art to share.
You'd be surprised to know how many DUers tell me that they took an art course as an elective years ago in college and they remember it to this day! They treasure the experience. That tells me that art isn't something you take lightly; indeed, it stays with you all your life...

(45,319 posts)level. I also learn new things, am reminded of things I'd forgotten, and usually at least once I feel slightly stupid when I fail to recognize a piece or place I have both seen in life and studied in school. To create such challenges means your own knowledge is impressive in every way. I enjoy the hell out of the challenges.

(63,926 posts)It is, however, a challenge for me to come up with new challenges, which is why I read about art constantly (which I love to do anyway) and try to visit as many museum exhibits as I can. And, of course, I am retired so I have the luxury of spending LOTS of time with this passion. An added benefit is that it is fun and since I can't DO art as a creative outlet, my next best thing is curating the Challenges.
As for difficulty, there is a reason for that. DUers as a group have incredibly deep and wide knowledge about art and a sophistication that wildly impresses me! There are real art historians here at DU and they give me a lot of recommended resources. I admire them; they have gone through the academic rigor that I have not, so the bar is set pretty high!
Thanks for your kind words. Hope to see you tomorrow...
