2. You get to assess a post that someone else reported

Something they believe violated the terms of service here at DU. A panel of fellow forum members will vote on whether there was an infraction. If enough agree that there was an issue, then the post will be hidden and the poster will get a warning.

If not, things carry on as per usual.

3. If you don't want to, just say no and nothing happens

Usually you are asked to evaluate a series of posts that end with one being questioned about a rules violation. You are clearly told which rule is possibly being violated. You read the posts and see if the last one was out of bounds. I have noticed about half of them are one poster seeking revenge on another who have a disagreement. Most are real violations and you vote to hide the out of bounds post. I think I have seen one or two who were Freepers here to disrupt.

posts for context. If after accepting being on the jury, you feel like you cannot properly vote on whether the post violated the rules, you can opt out at that point. So, don't be afraid to accept being a juror.

9. I look at it as judging the post, not the poster

The name of the poster isn't divulged. I kind of feel like it's paying back DU for all I get from the site. DU has been my refuge a lot of the time. I read way more than I post. I feel like it's a very fair system to have a jury here.

(I do make monetary contributions, too. I think I get more out of DU than I get out of other things I pay for, so it's only right that I give when I can.)

8. You're not making any commitment by accepting

There are times I think I can't make a fair assessment after reading the post, so I opt out.

If the Terms of Service aren't enforced, DU will become unreadable.

It can be frustrating when you simply cannot parse-out what the challenged post is talking about. However, I have been be asked for jury service on posts by obvious trolls. On the other side, there have been posts challenged without cause. So, on balance, I remain willing to serve.

Plus, serving an a jury is such an inherently democratic thing to do. Instead of having some supreme leader decide who can and can't say something, we let people who've been around for a while help keep others from stinking up the place.

But I do have to say, sometimes it's hard to enforce the "no bashing Democrats" rule. I know it's there to prevent trolls from taking over, but are we really supposed to sit idly by and say nothing when a Democrat acts like a jackass?
