Posts marked "read" that I have not read.

When I open a brand-new thread, about half of the responses are marked "read." I am not marking the entire form read at any time, unless I have a setting somewhere I don't know about. This appears to be new. It annoys me - not a big deal, but it annoys me.

Any suggestions/fixes?

Thanks!!

I'll call up what looks like a thread I haven't read that I know would interest me and discover that I already recommended it. Obviously, I don't know how these things work here, but I'm interested to see if someone has any advice.

... which is found to the right hand side under OP's and over the list/links to replies. The actual text reads as follows:

Always highlight: 10 newest replies | Replies posted after I mark a forum

Sometimes search results (e.g. from Google) will include that setting in the web address and clicking them will change your settings without you realizing it. If you are viewing the mobile version of DU, the links to change the 'mark as read' preference are hidden - here is the web address to switch that setting back and forth:

https://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=thread&address=125612821&togglemark=1#toc

(You'll have to copy and paste that - I didn't want to make an active link where people might change their settings without wanting to. Every time that web address loads the setting should toggle between '10 newest' and 'after marking forum'.)
