was getting the chance to serve on the board of a battered women's shelter.

It was full filling and yet so sad as I learned more and more about the way a surprising number of men treat their domestic partners.

We worked, of course, on funding the shelter, but we also worked on trying to get more of the police departments to accept the prevalence of domestic violence in all strata of society.

Too many people see the brutish Stanley Kowalski as the poster boy for Domestic Violence and far too many still believe that the "good" people, meaning the upper classes, are immune to something as primitive as spousal violence.

Anyway, I was able to meet some great, dedicated people while coming to grips with the way my Dad treated my mother.

It's a problem that i don't think will ever go away.

All I think what we can do is raise the awareness of Domestic Violence and also make it known that those who are victims have a place to go.

Well, that's my ten cents.

Oh and remember this, ten bucks goes a long way to help the shelters feed those needing help so desperately. Every bit helps get someone back on the road to a life without violence.

no. it wont. and education. not only a place for the women to get help or get out, but we NEED help and education for the children who are a part of this dynamics because much of it is learned behavior.

4. Awareness is a good thing. So is helping the many victims. That's still just addressing symptoms.

The cause is the sense of male entitlement and misogyny that all patriarchal societies instill in all children... not to mention the constant conflation of sex with violence, and the idea that violence is a reasonable method of resolving conflict. We really need to start addressing it.

With 11,000 victims of intimate partner violence in 9 months, I'd think this topic would warrant a little more of a push to reauthorize VAWA.

I damn sure wouldn't expect to see dems side with repugs to water it down.

'It will never change.'

'Human nature is what it is.'

There are lots of excuses for ignoring it.

with the balance attributed to either accidental deaths or suicides.

Vs. 11,000 women murdered by intimate partners... in a nine month period.

So... yeah.

Not that that changes the point, of course - 11,000 is an immense number, and a travesty...

Oh, the difference one digit makes.

I will now stop comparing the disparate amounts of attention received by these two issues. Thanks for pointing that out.
