(8,267 posts)blatant sexism -- the "femen fiasco," after several longtime members of this forum called her out with apparent impunity -- she said she's had enough, and intended to leave. I had hoped we convinced her to stay and continue to address the sexism and misogyny on DU.

I posted about the massive protests, brutal response, and subsequent injuries and deaths in Turkey in GD yesterday ... and I got a snarky, fucked up response about femen.
What's really amazing is that these types of people seem to actually believe they're not totally transparent. There are people who just don't know / give a shit, but anyone who does sees the nonsense for exactly what it is.

(36,556 posts)benevolent sexism (the holding the door brouhaha), all men benefiting from rape - that one was really bad. I hope she's just taking a break, but I wouldn't blame her for finding a more friendly online community. If one exists.
Anonymity does not make most people nicer.
redqueen
(115,108 posts)who are going to intentionally twist your words and ignore anything you say because it is just a game to them. You have to determine whether any person you're interacting with is actually genuinely interested in discussing ideas, or is one of those playing games. And if the person is playing games, then the only option is to stop engaging with them, and focus on communicating with people who are actually interested in communicating with you.

(3,724 posts)here is so much more pleasant. The ones involved have no desire to discuss or share ideas, they just like to jerk your chain and giggle. I think seabeyond is a smart and brave woman and I hope she's just taking a break.

Best wishes, BB, and thanks for keeping track and asking.

(8,114 posts)and it sounds like she won't be coming back to DU any time soon, if ever.
Which is sad. I very much appreciated her take on things, and it's a shame she doesn't feel welcome here anymore.
Best wishes BB.

(42,023 posts)I don't interact much, you know--exchange PM's and such--but I had one one-line person who I'd come to think of as a friend, we'd talk via PM's, exchange thoughts and stories; ( I don't have Facebook either) she hightailed it out of here a year or so ago. I didn't blame her either.
What those silly rabbits don't understand is that Sea cared enough about not just topics, but interacting with people I'd just as soon toss out with the recycle. A backhanded compliment in a way from her, but she did it. Even when there wasn't much to reach out to, she still tried. Me? Uh Uh. Not because I couldn't but I'm lazy about folks, once they're tagged as useless I see no reason to interact with them.

(3,724 posts)I am just like you in that I don't engage with people who behave badly - I put the whole lot of them on ignore and my opinion of this place has improved. Seabeyond really is a people person, that is one of her strengths. Me, I tend a little too far toward misanthropy. I hope to see her back here someday.

(22,871 posts)their new target now that so many of the the other outspoken feminists here have had enough of this bullshit. As far as I'm concerned DU is a hostile forum for feminist (unless they're polite and agree with the MRAs here.)and now openly welcoming MRS trolls.
BainsBane

(42,023 posts)I thought so at first, then thought about it more--I'm doubting it. They're both feminists activists and there are lots of places to spend your on-line time productively.
BainsBane
(53,116 posts)She is devoting herself to actual activism of far greater importance.
ismnotwasm
(42,023 posts)I like face to face stuff, and I keep telling myself to get a Facebook account because its becoming a very powerful activism tool. Email isn't cutting it. Nothing else sounds as motivating for Facebook as that, and on-line is the face of a lot of future organization/activism. (In fact I have to compose a big-ass email for something else I'm doing)
A discussion board like this is great for general politics, but many specific causes, from Feminism to Native American rights--not so much. It does help with composing opinions I think, for those who like to write, and those 'I forgot about that' or 'I didn't know about that' topics that get brought up from time to time.
Sheldon Cooper
(3,724 posts)it's good that they're using their abilities elsewhere. This place remains a misogynist cesspool, and I'm glad they've decided not to fight it anymore. There are far more worthy places on the internet and in real life.

(14,552 posts)And I am speaking from my own experience here. Once you drown out the slugs, they provided women with thought provoking posts with different perspectives. Did I agree with everything they said and posted, no. I did however see their points of views. They helped me verbalize some things better than I could have otherwise and along with other posters here I noticed things I would have not paid attention to before I started reading this forum. For that they did make a difference. That is why I miss them.
So the slugs get what they want. Silencing women that challenged their Neanderthal views. While I, and I guess others lose a voice that strengthened the forum.
