LOS ANGELES From Miracle Mom to Octomom and now, perhaps soon, Homeless Mom, the bizarre life of Nadya Suleman and her 14 children has been a subject that rarely fails to hit a nerve among those who have followed her personal soap opera.
With Suleman on the verge of losing her home and declaring bankruptcy this week with total debts as high as $1 million to everyone from her parents to her baby sitters to the water company, the Octomom Odyssey seems headed for darker days.
Beyond the fascination with her public foibles, such as posing topless in an obscure British magazine and talk of a solo porn film, is the very real concern about the welfare of her octuplets and six older children all borne from her zeal for in vitro fertilization.
Three of her six older children have disabilities for which she receives government financial support, Suleman has said. One is autistic, another has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and the third a speech impediment. The older children range in age from 5 to 10.

I am saddened by this. It appears she has indeed gone ahead with the porn. I realize this woman has made some bad choices, but my heart breaks for her that she must do this to support her family.
Thoughts? Am I crazy for feeling this way?

(18,672 posts)but in this day and age, it seems like even she is fair game - easy prey for a society full of people who feign moral superiority in order to avoid self-reflection. It makes me sad. Those kids don't deserve this, and she didn't have the foresight to know this is what her life would become. Hell, most of us don't. I don't judge her. If I had the money, I'd help her and the kids.

(17,049 posts)I think she does have something mentally wrong.
I just hate that she feels this is her only way out mental issue or not.

(21,078 posts)temporarily sending some of these children to live with relatives or something on that line. I'm not sure she is capable of handling this stress. Good post.

(135,425 posts)I can't imagine what kind of day-to-day life those children endure. They can't possibly be getting sufficient attention to thrive.
Yes.
It's obvious that she cannot care for these kids on her own.
Perhaps the doctor should help financially. It's not the kids fault.

(15,189 posts)A wedding invite to Brad and Angelina's and bring her kids, and drop them off. She was crazy to do this to begin with. She did it for publicity, and it worked for a while. Now she's looking for sympathy. Having 8 kids IS expensive, or didn't she know that.

(18,672 posts)My opinion is that she deserves compassion, rather than contempt. Contempt is the easy way to choose in this situation.

(102,509 posts)I think she does have a mental disorder but was clearly enabled by that disreputable fertility doctor--who ought to be held financially liable for this.
I think if she really gave a damn about these kids (and were of sound mind) she would try to arrange open adoptions for at least some of them. Of course I would have a hard time with anyone who suggested she be forcably required to give them up (in the absence of clear neglect), but one would think someone close to her could have some influence.
That said, it is pitiful that the only option for her appears to be pornography.
I try to be compassionate on this one-- I do have to fight the urge to be hyper-judgmental. But, I am convinced she was exploited while mentally impaired. Unfortunately, it appears that exploitation continues. Damn sorry situation.

(18,672 posts)I feel the same way. She's a person who's made some really poor choices, but her choices seem to be based more on fantasy than her being a criminal or some sort of narcissist or sociopath. Sometimes people take the BS signals blared out by our fucked up multi-media culture very seriously. She's someone, just like all of us, who desperately needed to feel love, but who took seemingly easy, but very difficult path to get there. We see cases like this, in different forms, again and again, yet still we're clueless. We think it's "us" instead of the fucked up culture and lies we've allowed to permeate us, making already beautiful beings feel like we're grossly wanting. We have to have money, or a litter of babies to get some love and recognition in this society. I can't wait until people have had enough of the game and start to wake up. Can't. WAIT.

(17,049 posts)horrid that she feels porn is her only way out. It's sad.
I am horrified by her choices with children, but at the same time I feel saddened by her financial straits. It's not these kids fault and to have to sell herself is just disgusting to me. Famous or not. It's just damn sad.
Thank you for your post. I thought I was CRAZY!

(29,135 posts)because I think she's a mentally ill woman who was at least partially goaded into her terrible choices by manipulators, users and opportunists. IMO, pornography manufacture is the least awful of the choices she has made.

I think she still has some pathological obsession with being a "star", so hopefully some of the money she gets from this will be used for psychological therapy...
