Speaking to 2,000 people in a crowded and loud hotel ballroom here on the second night of his Florida campaign swing, the 42nd president once again delivered an entirely off-the-cuff speech in praise of Democratic politics in general with a nod to President Obamas re-election.
He reprised the general themes of his well-received speech at last weeks Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., emphasizing the idea that the nations economy was in such turmoil that no one could have fixed it in a single four-year term.
First I want to say again something I said in Charlotte, because the whole election could come down to this, he said. I honestly believe it doesnt matter who caused it or whether the contributing factors all happened under President Bush or something I did or something Ronald Reagan did 30 years ago. Regardless, President Obama didnt cause it.

But it's nice of you to deflect for the current President.

(22,000 posts)NAFTA hasn't really made a difference one way or the other. The problem with the banks was much larger.
I agree it was nice of him to deflect. I'd rather him come out and attack Bush and the Republicans then take a hit for Obama.
I thought was negotiated by Bush Sr. and passed by republicans....though Clinton signed it.
Correct me if I'm wrong though, because I'd rather have the correct info

(4,551 posts)Bush Sr. negotiated NAFTA with the Conservative Prime Minister of Canada, Brian Mulroney, and the President of Mexico. It was basically a done deal by the time Clinton came into power.

(22,143 posts)Should have been used. Blaming Bush does no good here, he was out of power. All the trades on my job at the time were furious with Clinton's complicity on that issue. It should have been renegotiated if not scrapped entirely.
He does not get off the hook.
