2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI Don't Think That DWS & DNC Anticipated A Lawsuit Would Be Filed....
I think they perceive Bernie to be a lightweight because he said he wouldn't go negative and hasn't. I believe they thought he would just roll over on this and thought when he fired his IT guy that this would
make him look guilty and dishonest and it would be all over for him and them.
But Bernie is not a lightweight and he is not stupid. He was not going to be suckered into looking foolish. He turned it around on them and did something they did not anticipate. He filed this lawsuit and didn't just fold. It will be interesting to watch what happens next.
One thing that should happen is the DNC's IT firm should be handed it's walking papers. They screwed up. They were told back in October by the Sander's campaign. They either didn't fix it then or did a poor job in trying to fix it.

(14,195 posts)DWS took access away without allowing him the time to correct the issue.
Also of interest: DWS was cochair of Hillary 2008 and the data group chosen by the DNC to host their database is headed by the former it tech guy from Hillary 2008. Not that there is any bias or anything..........

(972 posts)Debbie Wasserman Schultz: Give the voter file back to Bernie Sanders' campaign
Petition by Carl Gibson
To be delivered to Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Chair
We demand that DNC chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz immediately reinstate the Bernie Sanders campaign's access to the DNC's 50-state voter file, which is crucial for voter outreach in the last weeks before the first Democratic caucuses. Shutting down Sanders' tools to reach voters is an infringement on democracy.
There are currently 251,382 signatures. NEW goal - We need 275,000 signatures!

(19,326 posts)It's called "Discovery", which empowers a plaintiff to gain access to information as to
what all went down, how long firewall was really down, any and all communications
between DWS, Clinton campaign, and/or the vendor about the firewall problems, whether
Clinton campaign also may have stolen data from Bernie's campaign, etc.

99th_Monkey
(19,326 posts)i'm not legal expert, but do believe discovery must be initiated by the plaintiff.
I also suspect this is why this became 'resolved' so quickly, is DNC is hoping
to avoid having to reveal stuff they'd rather not.
I think you're probably onto something there wrt the DNC's quick action on this.
When this story broke earlier, I saw a couple posts to the effect of, "what's Sanders's campaign hiding?" Looks like the shoe's on the other foot, now.

The insurance companies are laughing their heads off as American children are dying from lack of health care. So why would a Democrat support the 1%? Some people worship the wealthy, I guess.

(94 posts)When I saw the headlines early Friday morning accusing the Sanders campaign of data theft I was heart broken. I worried that my dream candidate had truly been involved in something horrible and corrupt and was about to go down in flames. I just had a sick feeling inside.
In one day Team Bernie was able to get the facts out to the public as to exactly what had gone down. Using his legal Complaint to quickly and carefully lay out the details of what had happened, this week and in previous months, and what the relationship was between his campaign and the Voter Data systems was brilliant. He and his team have cleared my mind up that not only were their actions legal and appropriate, but that he is the man that is ready for the 7 a.m. phone call. He and his team have great resilience and great ability to "put out fires". Of course, it helps to put out a fire if there is no actual flames there to start with.
This in contrast to HRC who has not been able to put out the Benghazi email fire after over a year.(Another fire with no flames). HRC may have been able to contain the damage of E-ghazi so that it did not consume her entirely, but she came out damaged all the same.
Bernie today showed how you handle controversy and thus passed a huge test today. Congrats!
Tonight I feel more committed than ever to my candidate.

(14,255 posts)The way the Clinton camp has redefined "negative campaigning".
When Bernie is smeared, that is just business as usual.
When Bernie campaigns against actual issues, the squealing about "but, but, but - Bernie said no negative campaign!!!!" is pretty hilarious - and tells me that Bernie was just supposed to gather in some of the voters who would otherwise have not bothered with the current lesser of two evils model, and hand them to Hillary. That is not going to happen, because those people think for themselves. Which, I guess, is annoyingly inconvenient for the DNC. They seem to be getting a wee bit sharpish.
I will never forget or forgive that DWS has campaigned FOR GOP buddies here in Florida, and refused to campaign or fund-raise for Democrats running against her GOP buddies. That makes me want to puke when some here maunder on about "true Democrats". For fuck's sake. If Bernie had pulled any of that crap he would have been pilloried here - even more than usual. DWS even sent an email - she sent it, not some intern - to John Morgan (wealthy and influential guy who was spearheading the medical marijuana effort here). DWS was against it. Morgan said what he thought of her. She emailed that she would change her stance on MM if Morgan would start saying nice things about her. The For Sale sign may as well be tattooed on her forehead. "True Democrat", my ass.

(23,730 posts)the didn't expect a *primary*: in their world they have everything sewed up--they have appeals written down for all the constituencies, they have the money (paying for pollsters), they have a lot of ways to appeal to Republicans (since this is just an extended GE campaign)
they still see this as a sort of overblown Dean '04 campaign, that they can find something compromising or just a gaffe that breaks the image of being "presidential"--that ultimately you still win by running to the right while promising to govern from the left
