"We don't belong to government. The government belongs to us."
A friend on Facedbook shared a Romney for President graphic this morning that was emblazoned with the line above. As is predictable, several right wing autobots responded with the usual "Hell yes" or "I do NOT belong to you, Nobama" or other such bile.
Another friend, an African American, posted a response that said, "Without the government, many of us would still belong to other people. Given the choice of belonging to my master or belonging to government, I chose government."
The right wing drivel curiously stopped after that one.

(272 posts)And I don't like the video stating "we all belong to the government"...
Plus - let's not go back to slavery stuff, especially since the right loves to tout how it was the REPUBLICANS that freed the slaves...
Government still belongs to us... It's just not the enemy as the rightwing nuts would have you believe...

(262 posts)... but I think they meant it in the same way you may belong to a club, a team, or a community. We each have an equal stake in the government.
Was it worded awkwardly? Yes.
Did they mean it the way some people are claiming they meant it? No way.

(18,124 posts)the rethugs and their references to freeing the slaves. If it had not been a politically expedient thing, massa lincoln would never had freed the slaves out of his heartfelt remorse at one man OWNING ANOTHER, it was an afterthought! Awkward no, and I echo the sentiment, I'm glad I don't belong to massa and that it is MY government to change as I see fit every four years. Go Michelle!

(2,479 posts)The government does have a partnership with private businesses, and a role in keeping us all employed. We need to stop running away from the idea.
As much as Lincoln freed the slaves, it was Democrats who eventually passed the Civil Right's Act. Clearly between FDR and Johnson, Republicans took the baton of racism. Now they are clearly the racists' party. There were more blacks on stage at the Republican con-vention than in the audience.
Republicans are in denial about government. But the truth is, without it they would not have a place to create a business, and we'd be chopping our way to our neighbor's house with a machete, and the houses would have no electricity, or water, or gas, at least many of them wouldn't.
Democrats just need to stop running away and start pushing rhetorical ideas into the ether. Now is the time--there hasn't been another time where Americans are yearning for an FDR type of democrat since 1929. Conditions are much the same now too.

(39,961 posts)without government, half of the entire population wouldn't be allowed to own property and wouldn't be allowed to vote.
These are typically people who would like to return to the days when women were subservient to men and white men were superior to everyone (and owned other people). I'm sure you can figure out which demographic predominately holds that point of view.

I appreciate our Gov for not standing in the way of our personal private relationship

(57,936 posts)Our government is merely an expression of our society. It is community.
This year, we are confronted with a choice. Is our government going to reflect us or reflect only the very rich?
If our society going to reflect all of us with our diverse interests and beliefs?
Or will reflect only those with a lot of money?
Our challenge is to prove that Citizens United will not defeat our democracy.
Get out and VOLUNTEER and then get out and VOTE.

(46,780 posts)When they say that government belongs to them, they mean they want to make the decisions to reward government contracts to themselves and their cronies.

(262 posts)To be honest, I'm a little surprised this person didn't just delete the OP, as has happened before when a post went horribly, horribly wrong.
