Drudge and AP hyping Orly Joe Arpaio's birther B.S.

We expect it from Mitt's pal Matt, who has his frontpage dominated by birther stupidity today (with blaring "It's a fake!" lead), but you think the AP could do a better job than pandering to this tinfoil shit:

PHOENIX (AP) — Investigators for an Arizona sheriff's volunteer posse have declared that President Barack Obama's birth certificate is definitely fraudulent.

Members of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's posse said in March that there was probable cause that Obama's long-form birth certificate released by the White House in April 2011 was a computer-generated forgery.

Now, Arpaio says investigators are positive it's fraudulent.

Mike Zullo, the posse's chief investigator, said numeric codes on certain parts of the birth certificate indicate that those parts weren't filled out, yet those sections asking for the race of Obama's father and his field of work or study were completed.

Notice how they leave out any and all background on Arpaio's crackpottery and present this nonsense as legitimate news in the first four paragraphs (the point at which most papers will cut the story). Sadly, the rest of the story is a similar tongue bath to Arpaio, with only a passing mention of how repeatedly debunked these claims are, as well as the controversy surrounding Orly Joe. But it's all at the end, and will probably not appear in 90 percent of the outlets that pick this story up.

The lib'rul media strikes again.

and let's not forget that courting crackpot smear websites like Drudge is part of Willard's strategy, as Think Progress recently reported:
Romney campaign spokesman Lenny Alcivar recently outlined how the campaign will avoid journalists and cooridnate and communicate their message through Brietbart.com and the Drudge Report:
When this election is over, one of the lessons that will be learned by the mainstream media is that they no longer have a toe-hold on how Americans receive their news. Never before – in a way that has taken Democrats off stride – have we seen the confluence of an aggressive online community, led by Breitbart, and an aggressive campaign team not willing to cede an inch of ground to Democrats. This combination has created a new political reality. We no longer allow the mainstream media to define the political realities in America. The rise of Breitbart, Drudge and others, combined with an aggressive Romney campaign is a powerful tool in the arsenal of the conservative movement.
…The governor will no longer allow the mainstream media to dictate the terms of this debate. This is just the beginning… We are witnessing the rise of the center right media.

Will the hacks of the beltway media call on Romney to denounce his ally's tactics?

The Phoeniz New Times rips Arpaio and takes down the whole stupid affair:
Things got a little testy with local media at one point -- which Arpaio believes has unfairly criticized the investigation. Arpaio would not address any questions concerning the MCSO deputy who went was sent to Hawaii to investigate with Zullo, nor would he answer any questions outside of the evidence presented.

"Look at the evidence and stop worrying about who's in bed with who," Arpaio said.

However, with yet another underwhelming presentation of evidence, the media's patience appears to be wearing thin with the birther investigation. Thankfully, Arpaio says that he and his birther posse has done all it can do. Now he's calling for Congress to take up the investigation, and commended his posse for undertaking a two-man investigation that would have taken "100 federal agents" to do.

How many investigators it takes to avoid bungling hundreds of sex crimes, we couldn't tell you.

Maybe we could ask Romney whether he agrees with Mr. Arpaio's findings.
