Perry wants Obama apology for voter ID lawsuit

By Catalina Camia, USA TODAY
Updated 20m ago

Texas Gov. Rick Perry is welcoming President Obama to the Lone Star state by asking the Democrat to apologize for Attorney General Eric Holder's comment that the state's voter identification law a "poll tax."

Perry, a Republican who ended his presidential bid in January, blasts Holder in a statement posted on his gubernatorial website. He said Holder's words, made during a speech to the NAACP last week, "inflame passions and incite racial tension."

"Perhaps while the President is visiting Texas, he can take a break from big-dollar fundraisers to disavow his Attorney General's offensive and incendiary comments regarding our common-sense voter identification law," Perry said. "The president should apologize for Holder's imprudent remarks and for his insulting lawsuit against the people of Texas."

A panel of three federal judges is deciding the fate of the Texas voter ID law, which requires a government-issued photo ID for voters. The state of Texas argues the photo ID is necessary to cut down on fraud. The Justice Department says this would create a burden for minorities ...

No worse than (P)Rick's call for Texas to secede from the union.

3. If there's worry about "racial tension" in Texas maybe the racists should leave.

You should have NO barriers to voting that include paying for something to vote. If you have to buy an ID, or a gun registration, or enroll in school to get a School ID, it IS a poll tax.

We were given the right to vote with NO encumbrances at all.

Has Perry learned NOTHING from the "apology" game?? What an ass.

for it not to be a poll tax. The documentation to get a photo ID also has to be free: birth certificate, name change, marriage certificate, naturalization papers, etc. Otherwise, it is a poll tax.

what with wanting all of these apologies lately. Isn't one of their chief complaints about President Obama is that he supposedly "apologizes" too much?

...for attempting to get away with voter disenfranchisement, which would affect nearly exclusively Democratic voters.

So, I'd say we're even.
