This Gessler guy is determined to disenfranchise Colorado voters.
Colorado Secretary of State Scott Gessler is intensifying his efforts to root out and remove any noncitizens from the state's voter rolls before the November election and this time, he has the backing of Attorney General John Suthers and top elections officials in 11 other states.
Gessler and Suthers sent separate letters to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano Monday, again asking DHS to help the state verify the citizenship status of about 5,000 Colorado voters. Suthers' letter also states that DHS is required under federal law to provide the information, and that the U.S. Supreme Court reiterated that requirement in its recent decision on Arizona's immigration law.
They also sent a nine-page draft memorandum of understanding that outlines how the process would work, and asked DHS to respond by July 20 so Gessler's office will have enough time to run the checks, notify voters and "remove names, if any, from the voter registration lists" before the deadline to make such changes in time for the Nov. 6 election.
"Our electoral system must have safeguards to verify eligible voters and prevent illegal ballots from being cast," Gessler wrote. "An unenforceable honor system does not build confidence in our elections."

(13,200 posts)Indeed, between 2000 and 2007, there were 32,299 UFO sightings in the United States, 352 deaths caused by lightning, but only nine cases of voter impersonation, according to a great new infographic by Craiglist founder Craig Newmark.
Yet conservatives continue to hype the extremely rare occurrence of election fraud as if it were something that happens every day and is somehow responsible for the election of Obama and Democratic candidates across the map. And there is evidence that theyve been successful in pushing this fact-free narrative among the broader public. In 2009, Peter Dreier and Christopher Martin of Occidental College studied the media coverage of ACORN during the 2008 election and concluded:
82.8% of the stories failed to mention that actual voter fraud is very rare
80.3% of the stories failed to mention that ACORN was reporting registration irregularities to authorities, as required by law
85.1% of the stories about ACORN failed to note that ACORN was acting to stop incidents of registration problems by its (mostly temporary) employees when it became aware of these problems
95.8% of the stories failed to provide deeper context, especially efforts by Republican Party officials to use allegations of "voter fraud" to dampen voting by low‐income and minority Americans, including the firing of U.S. Attorneys who refused to cooperate with the politicization of voter-fraud accusationsfirings that ultimately led to the resignation of U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales

Still they think ACORN was knee deep in voter fraud.

(15,801 posts)is a Tea Party darling, woefully ethics-challenged, with a breathtaking record of legally questionable actions. Our increasing voter registration drives are a direct response to his continuing efforts to disenfranchise large swaths of our population, and he's doing everything he can to limit our efforts with imposition of bizarre fines. That Suthers is supporting him is disappointing but not surprising.

Today is July 10th and they want a response by the 20th?
