however, it does seem obvious to be their main one. Even from simply looking at it from a militaristic approach, most dont seem to be willing to cut a dime (not that the current Democratic leadership seem to be any more likely).

It seems as though both parties currently are bought out by their wealthy 'special interests' (more middle-class interests for the Democrats, though).
